Too much idealism, makes brain hurt from the implausibility.

The Obama speech was very well written and he did a fine job conveying its message.

True, I did raise an eyebrow when he mentioned stuff like eliminating the US' dependency on foreign oil within ten years. And it will be incredibly difficult to get stuff like his healthcare proposal into law in its existing form.

Still, the policies that he's proposing are at least a better starting point for legislation than anything McCain has proposed.

Tax Cuts + Medicare = Bad.

I'm Canadian, I know my trips to the doctor are free, but I'm also aware the highest tax bracket is like 40% annually.

He's said he's going to pay for his proposed tax cuts by letting the Bush tax cuts on the upper income brackets expire, which is reasonable. I haven't looked at the numbers so I don't know how much the difference is, though.

The thing is, there's no way they can possibly calculate how much a medicare system is going to cost in the US. In very large nations, private medicare might actually be a better system, or at least two parallel systems.

If there's anything Democrats need to learn from Republicans is to take their pants off, plant themselves over a barrel and let the large corporations and rich people ream them. Because no matter what they say, those two demographics are large supporters of both parties, and personally I think Obama risks alienating his geographical bases by letting the Bush tax cuts expire, which is something most wealthy democrats secretly covet from the Bush years.

Perhaps the shitty economy has offset the tax cuts, but I don't see Obama reviving the economy via "killing outsourcing" and renegotiating NAFTA (which will kill my economy). And even then, medicare? It's gonna get squashed, just like when Bill did it. And Obama will go, "Oh well I tried." Just like Bill, and in the end of 8 years, America will still be a shadow of what they were pre 9-11. Hell, I'm surprised the terrorists aren't shitting themselves in their caves going, "olololololol we haven't even had to do anything since the WTC and America is still in shambles (well relative to their peak pre Bush)."

Either way, fixing the economy, at least in Canada after the Conservative party left it in ruins took fifteen years. And if there's anything bad about that particular period in my life, it's that taxes were high, and medicare still suffered. Starting universal health care during a period of economic duress just screams for failure. Actually, it screams single term lame duck president to me.

The wealthy make up one percent of the overall US population but supposed contribute to 50 percent of the income tax. The problem here is that with all the extra tax breaks and tax cuts along with watershed financial policies, that one percent is actually being rewarded more money for paying less and less in to the tax economy each year. Bush's tax cut has caused a situation in which the group of citizens who could help start the economy going in the right direction by funding some of these plans are in fact being allowed to set themselves apart from the rest of the nation financially That is what is killing us. the outsourcing of jobs is straining our economy as well as the goods are made in countries where the wages are only a fraction of what it would be here and thus the products are made from lower costs, but that savings is not passed on to the consumer. We pay inflated prices to large corporations who made the product for a fraction of the asking price. With the jobs choosing to outsource to other countries in vast numbers, people are displaced, these companies aren't setting these workers up in other facilities they are just firing them and closing their doors. The work is getting scarce and the cost of living is rising faster than expected for those of us in the middle class. With the tax breaks at the higher income sectors everything goes downhill. They keep money and make more money while the rest of us suffer, in short they don't care. The Republican party has a long track record of being pro big business and not giving a damn about upholding their promises to the people who they swore they would serve when in office. Look what it has done to this country, we are hated internationally, its estimated that this country's economy will collapse entirely within the next two tothree years if action isn't taken now. In 8 years Bush screwed this country for the sake of the all mighty dollar and now the dollar isn't even worth a dollar. We used to have the stronges currency in the world markets, but now Europe does (no offense European friends). Our money is taken at face value for the sake of the fact its US money, but now its valued less and less every fiscal year. We need change, the lower and middle class pull the line and get the shaft, its time that every income class be held accountable and pulled the line, because if this country fails there going to be worthless just like the rest of us.

I wanna see Obama win, just so I can see a black President fail just as much as any white or female president would. Has a president, prime minister or even pope ever lived up to their promises?

Sometimes I wonder if these candidates even realise what crap they're getting into... The US Presidency: Most powerful human on the planet, or biggest puppet show ever?

Of course, if anyone knows politics and firmly believes that money does not controls politics, please enlighten us!

My apathy for this coming election is god tier.

Obama's talking a big game that will be insane to deliver on, and McCain is a sequel of the much despised Bush saga.

Compared to the parliamentary system, the US president has comparatively much less power than a Prime Minister.
