YES IT IS MADE OF WIN AND GOD

Watching School Rumble Nigakki. Still have to catch up with some angst-ridden Gundam Destiny. Interested in watching Shakugan no Shana.

As much as I like Pani Poni Dash, I find that the zillion of pop-culture references thrown in it can be disorienting. Instead of focusing on the characters, I'm drawn instead to the pop-culture nugget or parody they're referencing to because so many of it is in your face that you can't avoid it. It's quite distracting and because of that, I find that I don't have much attachment for any of the characters or story.

It's junk food anime - it tastes great and fills your stomach for awhile, but an hour later you feel hollow inside.
good review! Pls watch The Melancholy of Haruhi S so you can join in the debate!!

Hey Den, Higurashi > Haruhi (but it's not funny or romantic!)

Well, that's why I said it's just retarded, time-wasting filler. I mean, with all the anime out there that might be thought provoking, dramatic or filled with emo teenagers with super 1337 powers - there needs to be a thing that, you know, comes in between. And IMO, PPD! fills that void. Something fun to look at for a while, and go "WTF?!" for a number of times at what the hell went on.

Definetely not the greatest comedy nor is it the best, but it does the job (well, IMO again) of providing temporary and absurd entertainment. And I guess I'm a sucker for that kind of anime.

*gives FCL the Ichijou glare*

On another note, has anyone been watching Mushishi? Something that isn't WTF, but it's more relaxing and focuses well on natural beauty, plus episodic storytelling. Some might think it's "slow" or "boring", but it's one of those anime which you seem to appreciate because of it's setting.

I'm not sure if that remark was meant to be in jest or if it were really a reflex defensive action to counter PPD criticism.

Humour is a very subjective human expression and if done right, it not only makes us laugh but also makes the subject or source of humour memorable. There's a reason why after so many years, some people can still recite Osaka's or Tomo's lines from Azumanga Daioh by heart: their well-developed characters make their slapstick humour endearing. While there were parodies and pop-culture references in AD, they did not take centre stage to the characters and the "high-school" anime theme in AD.

Whereas in PPD there're so many characters that it's hard to really keep track of who's who in which class, especially when one classroom scene may zip to another different classroom scene while displaying 4-5 "references/parodies" at a time. It's quite a lot to ask for the viewers to digest, and I didn't particularly like it when I had to stop and rewind back an episode while watching just so I could catch again an obscure reference/parody inserted in a scene just for the sake of being a 'wacky' anime.

I still like PPD, and I want to make it clear that I didn't really mean anything negative with my review of PPD and I hope you didn't take it that way. I'm just telling it as it is - PPD is junk food anime. I like absurdist entertainment myself (*hugs his Excel Saga and FLCL collection*), but not at the expense of trying to be too clever until the references and parodies become overpowering the anime itself.

So while I may still download episodes as they become available, they won't be on a high priority on my anime watchlist. I watch it when I want to watch something 'different', and then I'll go back to my usual watchlist. Chances are, I won't remember even half of the cast names or personalities a year or two later.

P.S. I'm a serious cunt.

I was VERY serious! Yout criticism hurted my favorite anime 1!!!1oen!!! :( :( :( /ignorant otaku mode off

Okay okay, I'm done kidding.

I think you misunderstood what I was saying XD I don't disagree with you calling PPD! as junk food anime - becuase like I said, it's just temporary entertainment. Nothing memorable for the long term. I can't call it a classic like AD or Excel Saga - because it misses something that makes it so memorable, aside from what the hell that goes on there. And yeah, even I don't get a lot of the stuff that goes there - but I tend to laugh. Call me silly, but that's how I tend to treat humor from my prespective. I do like a number of the characters, despite they miss the depth that other comedies exceed in doing so successfully, but it seems like the people behind the anime (SHAFT) is just focused on cramming in as much absurdity as they can.

And yeah, I'm very sure that a lot of people would agree to your viewpoint, and I totally understand it because it's true.
