Recently I've been listening to a somewhat new J-metal band called Galneryus. They're pretty good - their sound evokes a comparision with greats like X Japan. I really like it, except...

...ARGH their songs are all in English, or should I say ENGRISH!

Samples: Click here

So yeah, a good listen if you can get around their attempt at writing "epic" lyrics :x

Oh yeah, Glamorous Sky, the theme song for the movie NANA, by Mika Nakashima is pretty good. The only complaint I have is that I don't think her voice isn't suited to singing rock songs like that. She's more of a jazz/slow pop type person, so she tends to get drowned out by the guitars.

Still a pretty nice song though. The chorus has an addictive tune...

So, anything new going on? I've been sampling indie bands trying to find something I like, but most of them just seem so generic. I mean, some of them have some solid songs, but none of them seem to stand out. I suppose that's just the nature of indies music though.

Dir en grey's 'The Final' is on a double disk set called "The Best of Taste of Chaos".

Nifty!

not trying to derail your thread SS but i didn't want to make a new one for this question:

Just wondering if anyone here listens to Metal. If you do can you list some of the bands you like? I've really expanded my Metal tastes lately and wondered if anyone might have some random offshots that i may want to lean an ear to. thanks.

Most recently I procured Sakamoto Maaya's latest album, Yunagi Loop. It's her first album produced without Kanno Youko's composition, but it's still pretty good. I like most of the tracks on it, and there isn't really any track that sounds repulsive or weird.

I also got Younha's album Go! Younha after listening to her rendition of the Bleach 3rd ending theme Houkiboshi. Good stuff all around. :)
And yes, I know Younha is Korean.

CK: For metal stuff, I think Alseid/K'666 would probably know a fair amount.

Hey, dudes. I'm sharing all the KPOP (plus some Pump it up stuff, lol) I have.

Here's my list.

:3 I hope SOMEONE cares about this.

EDIT: Got Yunagi Loop some time ago... and while it's not a bad album, it lacks something.

But maybe it's just me, LOL!

So, I bumped the thread a bit ago because I was looking for some new bands to listen to because I've been listening to mostly older stuff lately. Then just recently I found Tourbillon's first album HEAVEN. Tourbillon happens to be a band including Ryuichi and Inoran from Luna Sea, and they definately have a Luna Sea type sound. So yeah, it's really good and I'm quite happy with it.

On the subject of Luna Sea, SS and I were talking about them and he brought up the question of what Sugizo has been up to. His last solo album was good, but it came out like 2 years ago. Apparently he's been playing guitar for a new band called The FLARE. They've only put out a few singles so far, but the one they have up on thier site is pretty good (though accompanied by a strange video).

As far as the other members are concerned, J has been making a lot of American sounding hard rock. He's actually got a guitarist from the Foo Fighters in his band. Overall he hasn't done anything great, but nothing bad either. Shinya seems to be drumming for food because he does a lot of drumming for other artists's solo projects.

I realized I didn't name any of the indie bands I tried out. I listened to Alice Nine's new mini-album. It was alright but nothing particularly stuck out about it. I've heard most of Phantasmagoria's stuff, which was pretty good, but I think I need to give it some time to grow on me. I really like Baiser, but they broke up before i even started listening to them. I hear I should check out Renter en soi because the singer for Baiser is their producer, and they have a similar sound. I guess I'll check them out if I get the chance.

Tourbillon isn't too bad, although their music doesn't seem really...catchy. I guess I'll give them a while to warm up :P

I thought Sugizo's solo album was fantastic, to be honest. Excellent composition and arrangement all around. He's certainly a great musician.

Not too keen on J's solo stuff, to be honest.

I thought Yunagi Loop was a bit meh at first, but after a few listens it's grown on me :) The songs are nicely arranged, and the lyrics for some of them are just beautiful..."Hello", for instance, is a song from the point of view of a person who has passed away and gone to heaven, singing to his/her lover to keep on living with his/her head held high...wonderful stuff.

(sneaks in)

jrock prospects:

Kagrra
Latest album San is great. Nice "Japanese" flavour to their songs. Satsuki is a must listen. Good luck reading their kanji titles. My pick for the "Next Great J-Rock Band".

D'espairsRay
Much improved from their indies days. Latest album Coll:set is very nice. Slight "industrial" sound.

Rentrer en Soi
Has a "classic" jrock sound. Good ol VK. Sometimes reminds me a little of Lareine at its best, although RES > Lareine.

Onmyouza
Anyone watched Kouga Ninpochou? "Mystic Japanese" sounding. Garyutensei, their lastest album is their best.

D
Nice instruments but melodies often weak. What's their obsession with a capella?

Plastic Tree
Uh, i only recommend one song - Tremolo.

OMG, who are you :D

Listened to a few samples on Rentrer en Soi's website, pretty nice stuff.
I don't really dig the Visual Kei look though, heh.

I downloaded a Rentrer en Soi album (I think it's their latest or something) but haven't got around to listening to it yet. In other news, my local Media Play is closing and has 20% off, so I looked in the anime soundtrack section and luckily they had AWAKE there. It cost me $11, which was about how much it would cost online, so that was cool.

Hello Dexaler. You probably don't remember me because I didn't listen to jrock back in your day, but at least it's nice to know you aren't dead.

Yeah, I just listened to it. It's really good, so it's kind of sad that they're the only band that does the 90's type visual kei thing now.

I dunno, usually when a band makes its way onto my regular playlist it isn't really their look that appeals to me, but their music. The look has very little to do with it. But to each his/her own I guess :P
