THE KOF FAN'S PROMOTIONAL PLAN

Post by Gunsmith » Thu Oct 06, 2011 00:21

Been kicking around some ideas for fans helping out - what do you think of this?

VERSION 2

The following promotional plan has no affiliation or permission with or from SNK Playmore, Atlus or Rising Star Games.
  • 1. Pick a trailer video:
    2. RSG Trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZ7NlmrUUE4&" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
    Atlus Trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKZk8ULvlAQ" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
    SNKP Arcade Trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0hFBMV8QXc" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
    SNKP Opening Movie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXc9_4-kqhY" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
or even any video you like!
    3. Copy the URL and post it into your facebook update (don't post it yet)
    4. Tag people who you think might be interested in the game by typing @theirname eg: @alan francois
    5. Add one of the following messages (or similar) to your video
  • I am going to kick your ass at this game (insert PSN/XBL info here)
  • I'm looking forward to this! Add me for some games (insert PSN/XBL info here)
  • I will give you £/$/€ 10 if you beat me at this game (insert PSN/XBL info here)
  • Hey guys! Come November 22/25, I will be leaving the Internet for a while...
  • Looking for some training partners!
  • If you think you can be the King, tag yourself in.
Do NOT spam, do not start trolling BUT do ask for challenges (doesn't matter if they beat you, what matters is they buy the game). Cussing them if they are chicken is fine, but if you think they will do the same to you, then it's a waste of time because nobody will budge.

I'm up for it. Not many of my friends are fighting game players, but they're not big on losing lol

Putting on my web developer hat for a moment...

Not terribly sure this is a good idea, mainly because all those Youtube uploads are going to compete with Atlus/RSG's videos for pageviews. Ideally they'll want to drive traffic to their videos by encouraging people to link to them on Facebook, G+, Twitter and elsewhere. We'd be undermining them by having our readers/members uploading carbon copies of the same trailer all over the place.

Granted, this sort of thing happens already, but I think you don't want to be encouraging it.

Your developer hat or your marketing hat?

Yes, I thought about that - that's why 1) this plan is not official 2) When you post Atlus's video on facebook, you can't tag anyone in it. You can't get anyone's attention directly. Tagging on facebook is far more involving. Uploading the video to youtube is not as effective but those who use it as a social network will get a bit more attention from their friends.

I believe right now exposure > hits.

I'm not sure, that's just what I think.

Just use current youtube links and tag people on facebook using @Kyo Kusanagi, @Iori Yagami. They have to be on your friends list, but it will email them, and put it on their profile page.

A bold plan, but I can't help but let my tendency to overthink things go over this:
Gunsmith wrote:The following promotional plan has no affiliation or permission with or from SNK Playmore, Atlus or Rising Star Games.

1. Go here: http://orochinagi.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
2. Choose a trailer video, or all of them, and save them to disk
3. Upload your favourite to your facebook and/or youtube channel
4. Tag people who you think might be interested in the game.
If they might be interested, odds are they've already seen the official promotional videos - maybe compilations of some cool moments from streams and other recorded matches between players who know what they're doing would be more impressive?
I generally don't check on that sort of thing, but I did happen to be online during this sunday's Southtown arcade stream and there were plenty of impressive moments there, so I wonder about other occasions, and how viable it would be to put together a "best of" from them - maybe none by themselves would be as iconic as the Daigo parry parry, but a fair number of interesting match situations between players could give a feeling Daigo's parry can't for most people, something like a "you could actually experience cool stuff like this if you tried this game".

This would be even more appealing if there were a console version to do this in with enough colors unlocked that people could mess around and make some fun palettes like the DBZ ones from one of the recent official blog entries.
Now that I think about it, I have seen palette edits people made with the emulated arcade version, like Duff Man Clark... not too comfortable with the idea of resorting to that though...
5. Add one of the following messages to your video
[*] I am going to kick your ass at this game (insert PSN/XBL info here)
When I see this I can't help but guess that a friend of mine would suggest Team Fortress or something else that's free for sheer competition. I get th feeling the focus should be on things that are more specific to KoF.
[*] I'm looking forward to this! Add me for some games (insert PSN/XBL info here)
[*] I will give you £/$/€ 10 if you beat me at this game (insert PSN/XBL info here)
After buying the game, that's still around less 30 £/$/€ on the winner's wallet, they might prefer pure profit in a free-to-play game they're more aquainted with...

Still with the notion of playing to the strenghts of what's unique to KoF, I wonder if there's a way to get these guys to make a KoF video.
Early on they started describing the lore of game series with at least 2 games in them, sometimes going for stuff with a lot more history, but the latest video from yesterday covered only a single Turtles game, so I wonder if they're running out of ideas or could accept script proposals (or financed production of the whole thing, if it's legit to have SNKP, Atlus, RSG andor the already proven ON ability to get the community to Paypal their way into making events viable together or separately providing the cash to make it happen) in order to get a KoF video ready before the end of November.

Or, you know, maybe ON (maybe with the help of other communities) could make its own attempt at a presentation in that style or something like Extra Credits, consisting on a contest for a short script with suggestions of images and game scenes to go with in, with the quality of these always increasing thoughout the video so that it ends with KoF XIII's beautiful graphics to make a bigger impression and making people intrigued about the game or its lore.
I'm only suggesting something in this format since I know zilch about video editing - if I were to write, gather images and footage and learn to work video software in time to do this by myself before release, it could probably still be refined by having more of the community looking at the script and suggesting improvements to make everything as clear, concise and fun as possible.
The official promotional materials go on about the culmination of the Ash saga, but that means nothing to people unfamiliar with the series, so covering that in a brief fun way could help, especially if the hanging plotline of Kensou's dragon power business and the Hizoku is hinted at, since that hasn't ended yet and so can't be seen on Youtube, unlike most KoF XIII endings.

So, long story short, focus on the unique aspects of the game, maybe on 2 fronts: gameplay (best of streams/match videos to show how the game itself can be exciting and technical) and lore (briefly explaining the story so far, hinting at the stuff that's still unknown so that people are curious enough to dig a bit deeper).

Good points, teh most interesting one being to capture the best moments of KOF - we need Daigo moments - closest thing I could think of would be something from the EVO/ST/TAC/SVB videos. The best would be with crowd noise but I don't think we have anything like that yet. Or do we? I can edit videos and I know ppl who can do good graphics, so find those moments and we'lll make a kick ass trailer

This is a good idea. Sadly I don't have many people on my facebook that care about games.

I have been considering having a KOF month in November. Going to play a lot of old school KOF and hopefully I can stream it and post some vids on youtube of it.

Giby's idea sound good to me.

RunningWild/Izlude has uploaded some of the cool moments of the STA ranbats on his Youtube channel...I'm sure there are more.

Sounds like fun but streaming old skool KOF isn't going to promote the new skool, I think.

Loona, tell us your idea for a trailer.

Here's UMVC3's latest (I think).

(interestingly, a lot of whining from the fans in the comments - while I'm not surprised, I didn't expect that - perhaps the Capcom fans are getting tired of being milked and the prophecy of fighting game meltdown will certainly come true)

I have got too much on my plate right now to really focus on this, but I help with feedback and I can put the pieces together.

Gunsmith wrote: Loona, tell us your idea for a trailer.
Sorry about the late reply, I've been away for a couple of days.

It's more like a couple of possible ideas:

- there's the catching-up-on-the-lore one - I've e-mailed the Youtube lore guys I mentioned to see if they accept submissions, as handling stuff through them could provide more exposure, but no garantees, that account seems to get contributions from people involved or several other existing Youtube shows - either way, I could take a crack at a script, and maybe not have to fit into the minute requirement, and try to come up with enough screenshots and footage of relevant moments from the plot-relevant games so far

- the "cool moments" one - I would have to check hours and hours of videos to put some together, so a shared effort could be more efficient, if several people could pitch in with favorite moment from matches they've watched and liked. I only just got started by checking the oldest thread in this forum's KoFXIII video section and the latest cyberfanatix news post:
* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiPbfkQi ... age#t=117s" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - Ryo defends from a jumping attack with one of his parries, from which he pulls of (cancel?) a Zanretsuken, managing to juggle a few more hits off that
* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0k-wL8t ... ded#t=234s" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - Leona reacts to a projectile by using her aerial super, which flies so close to the projectile on the way to landing I can't tell if there's invencibility there or a real close call
* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0k-wL8t ... ded#t=238s" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - same match, different moment: Leona anti-airs with a Moon Slasher, and from that juggles into a Grand Saber which then leads to an EX V-Slasher super for extra flashiness (a similar thing happens earlier in the video, the the enhanced super just looks cooler); I didn't know that juggle was even possible, which was a neat touch
Basically, reacting to stuff by doing impressive-looking stuff one way or another, it's a bit less boring to watch for me than combo videos, at least. I'm pretty sure I've seen better in the one stream I've watched, so there's probably a lot better stuff out there, I just don't think I can find it all on my own.

- a more mixed concept, which could be handy for people who've been out of touch with the series and may not have realized the games never stopped being made and how much they've experimented and evolved throughout the years, trying to use footage from older games that have the characters from XIII (ideally, also only resorting to the stages that were remade for XII, but I don't think there's a legit way to get FF1 footage of Hwa Jai in the PaoPao Cafe stage, for example...) in it to then follow them up with flashes of how they've turned out in their latest iterations (also ideally, with transitions as smooth as in this Ryu video that covers several games he's been in).
Basically, start by covering the characters from oldest to newest with footage of their games (regular matches - assuming the focus is on the fighters, considering the likes of Athena and Ralf - , maybe intro and intermission stuff if relevant) in release order, showing glimpses of how they are and what they can do in XIII (maybe also a brief glimpse of their XIII artwork too) before moving on to the next one, and probably ending with a short compilation of cool moments.
To tie everything together, maybe have a silent written narration with a double meaning, that of constantly training, fighting, experimenting, putting your skill to the test, falling and getting back up again, always evolving and being stronger for it, and that of all the games SNK has released throughout these past 20 years, all the different things they tried in them, all they've learned, the things that worked, those that didn't, how they managed to stick around even despite bankrupcy and are still experimenting and learning, and at this point their latest work is something you'd probably enjoy.
As something fan-made, the narration probably shouldn't be in the 1st person, maybe 2nd or 3rd... it's a rough idea, so I'm still wondering about details like that, while thinking about bits and pieces or the whole thing:

*FF1 intro with Terry looking over South Town* "All those years ago you decided to take on the world"
*more FF1 footage, making sure to also involve at some point Andy, Joe, Hwa, Raiden and Billy - maybe with some plae-shifting* "you were rough around the edges, but you knew how to handle yourself; it was a small yet dangerous world you took on, but you weren't alone"
*equivalent XIII footage of the previous matchups* "you've gotten better since then"
*the AoF1 intro scene with the portrait breaking and Yuri dissapearing from it* "we were worried for you"
*AoF1 match with King, preferably showing off some zoom, power charging and usage of supers* "but you surprised us in every possible way"
*quick KoF XIII footage with Robert, Ryo and King, preferably showing off more recent moves* "and you still do it to this day"
*FF2 footage with Mai and Kim, maybe with the little pre-match screen with the globe saying "conquer the world" in it* "you've travelled the world since"
*KoF XIII footage with Mai and Kim in it - maybe showing off Mai's stance because the response to XII sadly reminded us that people respond way too much to that* "and seen impressive sights"
*AoF2 footage of Yuri and Takuma in Takuma's stage* "yet you never forgot your early lessons"
*KoF XIII equivalent of the above* "you've changed since, but your basics are solid as ever"
*FF Special footage of the dream match against Ryo, or at least just the versus screen before that* "not settling for your modest successes, you dared to dream higher"
*KoF94 intro* "so the world welcomed you to prove yourself"
*94 footage of Kyo, Benimaru, Daimon, Ralf, Clark, Athena, Kensou and Chin, preferably at some point using dodging and power charging* "and you did, always learning and you too had things to teach"
*KoFXIII equivalents* "people knew they had to start paying attention to you - you were becoming the elephant in the living room"
*glimpse of rugal's statues* "but you knew all too well you weren't the only one"
*Kyo/Iori footage from 95, preferably in Iori's stage* "but for now you had other business to take care of"
*KoFXIII equivalent* "some of which never seemed to go away"
*96 Leona, Vice and Mature footage, preferably involving some rolling* "and some of which taught you important lessons"
*KoFXIII equivalents* "which you still use to this day"
*the KoF logos with years in them go by in quick yet readable succession* "you've been at this for many years"
*KoF99 footage of K' and Maxima, maybe some of the previously mentioned character, preferably using stuff like strikers, the backward roll that then goes forward again, Counter and Armor modes* "long enough to see technology change, and to try some new things yourself"
*KoFXIII equivalents* "not all of them lasted, but it was worth trying"
*Kula appears and fights in KoF 2000* "you don't want to be frozen in time"
*Kula fighting in KoF XIII, preferably with moves she didn't have back then* "not in this ever changing world"
*Zero Cannon nuking South Town in KoF 2000* "you were at the top of your game, but sometimes that's not enough"
*whatever from 2k1?* "you got hit pretty hard, and it wasn't always pretty to watch"
*2k2 footage* "but you got back in shape quicker than anyone would have guessed"
*2k3 footage of ash, shen and duo lon, maybe starting with intro footage of ash* "maybe not at your best ever, those were strange times"
*KoFXIII equivalents* "but you were certainly on the right track"
*XI footage of Liz, maybe a bit of her ending with Ash showing off purple flames* "maybe not as often as before - you had to pace yourself if you wanted to to greater things"
*XIII Liz, maybe flameless Iori or Ash using his NeoMax with purple flames in it* "to make some big steps forward"
*XII footage with Raiden in the very least, maybe Liz or Mature while at it, maybe using stuff like that game's counter-into-combo system* "slowly but surely"
*coolest XIII footage you can toss in* "to the place where you really want to be"

Nothing set in stone, but this sort of stuff has been ticking at my head throughout the weekend, might as well try and write it down here, even if it's not a final version - sounds like a compromise between the 1st 2 proposals.
