Well, it seems the game isn't going to be using any of the music from the original arcade 2k2, so it'll be an arranged soundtrack right from the start. I'm already drooling at the idea of the CD compilation for this baby, though how much of the material will be new is another question. 99 had arguably some of the best original compositions, and 2k wasn't bad either , so having Tears, Sadistic Eyes, Esaka ~Acid Mix~, Goodbye Esaka, KDD-0079/0084, Dear Falling Angel and 178th Street inside is worth the price of admission IMHO. As long as nothing from 2k1 gets reused, they can't go very wrong.

Why not 2k1 stuff?

NESTS Team theme was awesome. And Igniz' team was nice too, but didn't fit the character and all.

2k1 music was horrible, comprising little more than synth loops without even any attempt to simulate any semblance of tunes. Worse, the loops are really short too so the tracks are repetitive like heck. The music for 2k1 is about the worst I heard, ranking up there for the first Capcom vs SNK.

Yeah, 2k1 had really bad music. I only think that Original Zero and Igniz's themes are passable.

Here's what I'm hoping for:
Japan team: Tears
Yagami team: Arashi no Sax 2
Fatal Fury team: 176th Street
AoF team: Beauty & the Beast
Psycho Soldiers team: I think whatever they have in 2k2 fits decently
Agent team: KD-0084
Ikari team: WW3
New Face team: Bloody
K' team: KD-0079
NESTS team: Ice Place...even though I think whatever they had in 2k2 fits ok (Napolitan Trance)
Korea team: Let's Go to Seoul
The not in original 2k2 team: Having Lin in there makes it hard to get a theme for each of them, I guess we can throw Still Green here for the team...
97 Team: C62 for Yama, Blue Mary's Blues for Mary, and London March for Billy
Masters Team: In Spite of One's Age
New Girls Team: Come Up Smiling?
96 Woman's Team: Either Get n' Up or Ne! if they want to go old school
Kusanagi: Esaka? or Acid Mix, or the original Esaka.
Kyo-1 & 2: Esaka? Acid Mix
Nameless: No BGM (lol)
Kyo vs Iori: Goodbye Esaka

Somehow I think Stormy Scream would fit nicely for Iori's theme. The Japan team gets a new version of Esaka?, so Tears may be used for Kyo vs K' instead. I don't know if any of the older pre-98 arranged tracks will be reused, since they already got a last hurrah in 98UM (though like you said, for some teams like the Orochi NFT or 97 team, reusing the old tracks would be fine).

If they did redo Esaka? it may be entirely possible that SNKP are pulling out the stops on 2k2UM and having a new arranged soundtrack. So long as it's done by Sha-V and sounds good, I'm all for it. I really didn't like the 2k3 AST and 2k was something of a hit or miss affair after the amazing '99 AST, so it wasn't until XI that I felt SNKP got their groove back.

I think the AST for this is going to be a must-have, and if the new mixes turn out good, I'll gladly pick this soundtrack up. I hope each track won't be drastically shortened, but it's a highly unlikely possibility.

Why no love for the 2k1 NESTS theme?

It was like the only "normal" track that made sense, and it sounded evil (fitting the team).

It's down to a matter of personal preference, but I personally thought the 2k1 NESTs theme sucked big time. The opening was horrible, although it got slightly better later. The 2k2 NESTs theme was a little better and sounded more festive, but the loop was very short, and it was pretty much that one loop for the entire track.
