The King of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match PS2 Challenge FAQ

v0.1

1. Throw off x5

-A random opponent will walk towards you and attempt to throw. Reverse this
by pressing Fwd C or D as they throw you.



2. CD counter x5

-A random opponent will throw special attacks at you. I had Terry doing
Bare Knuckle at me. Just hit CD as you block the special attack.



3. Recovery Roll x5

-Goro will sweep you. Hit AB as you land to recovery roll, or you will be
grabbed off the floor!



4. Defeat Leona

-Leona will roll continuously. You can't throw her, you can only combo her.
You can use specials, DM or SDM. The challenge is completed when she is
KO'd.



5. Fwd Evade Roll x 5

-Yamazaki will snake arm continously. His snake arm hits low and hits
twice. Roll in to get close, duck and block then press AB + Forward to evade roll.
(thx Fatacon for correction)



6. Defeat Iori.

-Iori will CD counter anything. You must out counter him by cancelling
your move into another.
Character Used: Any
Kyo: CD into DP A
Benimaru: CD cancelled into DP D
Restrictions: None. You can use DM/SDM.
Recommendations: Ralf - ABC to power up, then cancel CD into QCF HCB C
SDM to defeat Iori in one move!



7. Do a combo involving a normal + command move + special
Character Used: Iori
Crossup Combo Andy x4 hits works fine! Jump Bk B, C, QCB Cx3
Or use the default macro! (Thx Fatacon for the macro tip lol)

8. Defeat Kyokugenryu
Character used: Eiji / Kasumi
Enjoy learning these characters because you'll need to defeat the
whole AOF family: Yuri, Robert, Ryo and Takuma, with one life bar.
After defeating one member, in traditional KOF manner you will get
a little life back.
Recommendations: I used Kasumi and poked a lot with Stand D. Yuri
is an idiot, Robert likes to jump, Ryo will walk right into you and
Takuma will try to counter with his QCB A/C. More on this soon.



9. Hop combo x3 hits
Versus: Benimaru
Recommendations: use Iori or Kyo



10. Guard Crush
Versus: Clark
Recommendations: You only have to hit Clark once, so if you stick to a
simple combo and repeat it, eg: Ryo j C, C, QCF C, eventually you'll
guard crush and combo. Of course Chris and Iori are particularly good with their
easy chain combos.



11. Counter hop CD x5
Versus: Ralf
Characters used: Kyo
Conditions: 30 seconds
Just DP C!



12. Combo DM
Versus: Joe
2 hits is fine. Just combo a DM!



13. Cancel AB into special
Versus: Kensou
Recommendations: Welcome to the new system of AB cancelling. To cancel,
you must press AB just after you hit with a normal move.
Thus: Kyo: C, AB, QCF C.
Note that some characters like Ralf cannot AB cancel and combo, they get
pushed back too far.
Iori can do C, AB, C, QCB Cx3



14. Cancel MAX into special
Versus: Athena
I'm sure you'll get carried away here, you big screaming Athena fans.
Iori: C, ABC, QCF C. Rookies and pad users with not so nimble fingers
should use the PS2 shortcut button that allows ABC to be pressed in one
go...



15. End the Garou Densetsu story
Character used: Geese
Versus: Yamazaki (EX), Mary (EX), Joe (EX), Andy (EX), Kim, Krauser,
Terry (EX)
Recommendations:
vs Yamazaki: QCF A to start seems to hit every time. He doesn't snake arm
like an idiot like he used to. Sweep, run in and dwn fwd C. Use air QCB A/C.
Your combo j C, C, HCB A is safe to use. Don't roll, he'll do dwn A and
catch you every time.

vs Blue Mary: Just Hop and combo. She likes getting beaten up for some
reason.

vs Mai: Ugh. She's fast and will poke. Place yourself to lure her into
throwing fan, jump and combo.

vs Joe: Let him come and Stand D. He like to empty jump into dwn A into
DP so Dwn C or DP A when you see him jumping.

vs Andy: Same but he will jump D and combo.

vs Kim: Just wait for the QCB B, roll and combo, you should have stock for
some Deadly Raves by now!

vs Krauser: This just scares the hell out of me. Try to anticpate his
blitzballs and Jump and Combo. If you see him jump with an early B/D,
then hop up as soon as he lands as he will try to command throw you, so
combo his ass. He will also try to run and Gigatech Pressure grab you!
Don't be afraid to jump back and airblock. Also, when you knock him down,
attack with a jumping CD, he's trying to counter with something...

Terry: Same as Joe/Andy. Poke him to death. He'll do bare knuckle soon
enough. Watch out for his slide kick and don't jump on him, he's ready
to Rising Tackle!

Trivia: Each opponent apart from Krauser and Kim is faced as their EX
version! And as you face them, each opponent has their Fatal Fury
soundtrack playing. It's a total trip!



16. Inflict 50% damage.
As you've just been using Geese, I think a nice j C, C, QCF HCB C SDM
Deadly Rave should be easy. If not, pick Blue Mary.



17. Defeat Yuri
Versus: Yuri
Yuri will CD counter. You'll need to cancel CD into a DM for this.



18. 3 Rising Storms in a row against jumping Mai
Character used: Geese
Versus: Mai
You must hit Mai with Rising Storms ONLY and she must be mid air. If you
hit anything else, the counter resets.
If you don't like doing the Risiing Storm motion, you can do HCBx3.



19. Goro's hard combo.
Versus: Chizuru
Character used: Goro
Chizuru offers to help out train Kyo's team mates.
You must do D, Dwn Fwd C, HCBx2 C

This is where things start getting really hard and then you hear about
macros. What? Each character has a macro button which you can program
in practise mode. It's called COMMAND in practise mode but it'll get
confusing here so I'll call it macro. Anyway, get in there, program
HCBx2 into it, and there you go, easy combos for everyone. You can see
how to use the macro menu in the main FAQ.

20. MAX Cancel into AB cancel into move into special
Character Used: Kyo
Versus: Brian
Remember in practice mode to put your life to full.
Recommendation: Fwd B, ABC, AB, C, QCB HCF C
As soon the Fwd B hits the first time, press ABC, as soon as it hits the
second, press AB, a tiny pause, then finish the dodge attack with C
cancelled into QCB HCF OROCHINAGI.
You can do the dodge attack with QCB C, so you can finish the DM motion
with HCF C

I've found a bug here
I chose EX kyo in EXTRA mode with red life and programmed the macro
I chose Kyo in EXTRA mode and the macro was the same!
But when I changed the settings to full energy, the macro changed to the default! And then the other macro never came back.
At least I got to test what I wrote...

21. Defeat the Orochi Clan
Characters Used: Divine Weapons team: Kyo, Iori, Chizuru
Versus: Yamazaki, Mature, Vice, Orochi Yashiro, Orochi Shermie, Orochi
Chris, Goenitz, OROCHI
Yes that's right, Goenitz!
More on this later, I still haven't defeated Goenitz. Argh. Then I found out I had to defeat Orochi as well, whoops!

Well, I remembered watching Saito on GGPO and focused on Chizuru. Oh yes, I beat them all simply using Dwn C, Dwn Fwd B.
The only ones that gave me any real trouble were Yamazaki and Vice.
Note you've got to be brave and run in to continue pounding with that chain.
Yamazaki: If you slide, he'll block and if you keep blocking, he'll snake arm or DP +K. However the cpu is reading your motions, if you don't hold block he'll do something else! If you keep sitting he'll occasionally Fwd A. Wait for the snake arm and roll or wait for the DP K and block then combo.

Mature: Run in and Dwn C Dwn Fwd B. rinse and repeat. Occasionally she'll try hcf a to go over your slide but generally Dwn C beats everything.
Vice: pain in the ass. She'll block and roll. Don't jump unless you want to eat her various anti airs and her new anti air DM! This is when I use SDM qcfx2 K and jump B to break her guard. Be patient.
O. Yashiro: He'll roll and go for QCB A. Just keep at him with the chain.
O. Shermie: rush in and repeat. You can out prioritise most of her stuff. That stand A of hers beat Kyo's jump Dwn C! So don't jump.
O. Chris: he's a bit stupid. Once knocked over, he'll eat any jump combos, but simply doing the chain works best.
Goenitz: Rush in and chain him to death. Note if you're using Iori, and ONLY after you knock him over, he'll block the crossup B, but get hit by Iori's stand B which you can then combo and repeat until he's dead.
Orochi: bleugh, if I didn't have Chiz I don't know really what I'd do. But pressure seems pretty good. Orochi now sits down! Tut how unbecoming.

22. Juggle FOUR times
Versus: King
Character used: EX Kyo
This means Juggle four times using FOUR different specials.
QCF D, pause, D, RDP B, ABC, QCF B,B, DP C
The Max Cancel is done IN THE AIR right after you hit with the RDP B

30. Defeat the boss team! O. Iori, O. Leona, Goenitz, Omega Rugal and Orochi

You get to use ONE character.

Using Iori, as noted by J]-[UN, you can use the crossup B, stand B combo as they won't block it.
However I've noticed if your timing isn't tight, Leona will often try to counter and sometimes blocks the whole thing.
When you face Omega Rugal you need to lure him into doing a fireball so that you can maiden masher underneath and then do your crossup combo.
Batsu from the GF forums heard about Chizuru spamming DP C to kill off everyone. I tried it, it works, with exception to Omega Rugal.
Simply walk up to everyone and repeatedly DP C to knock them over and then again to outprioritise any counter they attempt.
The only one who won't fall for this is Omega Rugal but I found that if you slide(DwnFwd B) (from a distance) he rolls, upon which you can grab or combo.

My friend and I have been stuck on challenge 20 for an hour. It's not the translation that we're stuck on, we know what to do; it's executing it!

Seriously, WTF! The challenge with Extra Kyo is: Q. MAX into Quick Dodge into Dodge Attack into DM.

The suggestion from the Japanese wiki page is this LOL:

Close s.A, Q.Max, s.C, Q.Dodge, Dodge Attack, C version Orochinagi (4 hits).

Which translates to this: A, ABC, C, AB, A/B/C/D, QCB~HCF+C. One of the most stringent combo timing EVER!

EDIT: Finished all the challenges all but 20, 24, and 29 (only 20 is giving me a real headache). So I can help out if anyone needs assistance with translation or whatever.

EDIT2: Only 20 remains.

Just break your guard by a front roll (by pressing forward + A+B) 5 times.

As an alternative solution to number 17 you can pick Geese (or anyone with a reliable counter move really) and try hitting Yuri with close C or something and automatically performing the counter move input (hcb+D in Geese's case IIRC), that way Yuri's CD counter will be intercepted by the counter and she'll take damage, rinse and repeat. With Geese specifically you can also perform his df+C ground grab after the counter for extra damage.
