Terrorism Discussion Topic

Check BBC or CNN if you haven't heard about it.

Al-Qaeda are the main suspects. There are theories that they were gonna attack the city which won the 2012 Olympics.

Anyway, hope any ONers or friends/family of ONers, based in London are ok.

EDIT: Changed topic title from "Terrorists Attack London".

Holy crap, what unfortunately precise timing >_<

So much for Al Qaeda being dead. Looks like they're still alive and kicking.
And I bet governments everywhere are going to use this as an excuse to push even more stupid "anti-terrorism" legislation everywhere...

bleh I was looking around and just posted in news forum. I'll delete that and leave this one here.

I wrote

"I was on my way to make an appointment, to find the tube station closed. Took a bus down to the next station down the line, to see smoke pouring out of something down the road. That was one on the bomb sites! Had I been working a normal 9-5 day, I might well not be standing here today.... crazy. My condolences to the those not so lucky..."

(Possibly) Seven explosions on 07-07?
Listening to the news on TV, says 40 or so dead, 200+ injured, and al Qaeda taking responsibility. Damn... a day after the 2012 Olympics were announced for there too.

my initial reaction was: 'damn the french,' but then i realised it was actually very serious.

i wonder what this bombing was trying to acheive? the olympics are over 7 years away and the G8 summit isn't THAT significant...

glad you're ok, gunny.

The G8 summit is VERY significant. It's where the leaders of the eight most developed countries in the world are right now. A good number of these countries have troops in Iraq, and have contributed in some way towards trying to curtail Al-Qaeda operations.

What better time to get their attention (and/or try to provoke them) than when they're all in the same place?

..sounds like an action movie. But it's effective. I wonder what new and interesting regulations and such will come to pass.

*also wonders what would've happened if NY won the Olympics for 2012*

Gun, as much as I enjoy picking on you...

Glad to see you're ok.

The boss is alright... im glad(you know I would hug you if I could Gunnie, so dun mention it).

But yea, NY and Paris should be on the lookout, its looks clearly to me that the attempt was related to the Olympics. What other event gathers the attention of all nations.

I highly doubt the Olympics had anything to do with it...London got the Games for 2012 scarcely a day before the bombings, which is hardly enough time to coordinate such an attack. The G8 summit was planned many months in advance which would have given the terrorists plenty of time to get their logistics in order.

I say it was just a coincidence (and a tragic one at that).

I heard that a tape was found with AQ claiming responsibility as revenge for the Iraq invasion and that other nations are under threat unless they withdraw.

It is sad when there is loss of life. It is sad that people lose their families over these types of politics...

Anyway, this was to be expected, I am surprised people are acting all shocked about it.

Lets see, these countries(the alliance) have troops stationed in their land and are murdering their people every day, and yet almost no one seems to notice/care, BUT the day that they strike back, OMG they are so horrible, terrorists ! HERESY!

Really now, if a foreign country had soldiers invading your country, and they were LITERALLY breaking into your house telling you(and your family) what to do and how to live your life, would you stand for it? would you strike back?

I'll always be amused when people feel that 'them' striking back is a terrorist act and a tragedy... its like if a human has a little cat cornered, and is beating him, for kicks, but gets all offended and insulted if the cat tries to fight back...

Again , loss of life is a bad thing of course, but these people were provoked, plain and simple...
