TV Shows thread

Recently i found anime to be insufferable at times, or better, i found myself in such conditions that i'm unable to enjoy what anime have to offer - generally speaking, bullshit. I still like them when i'm in a good mood though!

Anyway in the meantime i started watching some tv shows:

Kingdom Hospital: Wanted to watch this for a while. It's not bad at all, infact it's sort of good, too bad the backstory is boring and the bishonen character is stupid. The original, Riget, is something else.

Pushing Daisies: This has to be the cutest thing i've ever seen, only watched a few eps because it feels precious. Everyone should watch it!

Supernatural: This is mediocre at best, but i'm a sucker for monster of the week stuff. Can be sort of funny at times, but the main story is fucking awful so i stopped watching.

Battlestar Galactica: I'm really enjoying this. The characters are very interesting, each of them in its own gray area. Their interactions makes for many themes that are rare to be so well explored in SciFi shows. Great stuff!

Wow, I always wanted to make this thread, but I assumed nobody here gave a crap about regular television. Here are some shows worth mentioning:

The Wire: Best television series ever made. There is so much depth to every character and story arc it makes it hard to describe how smart the show is. It realisticly portrays drug dealers and the detectives working the cases related to them. I can't recommend it enough.

Damages: I just started watching this and I'm approaching the end of the first season. It's an interesting show, with a lot of mysteries, but none of the twists ever feel cheap because all characters actions make sense. Pretty much all the characters have flaws and secrets and are working to "win the game" you might say. There ends up being some likeable parts of characters that you don't expect.

X-Files: I grew up watching this as a kid and I've recently went back and started rewatching it. I'm about halfway through the series and I really do like it. It's not a deep series and it's often silly an weird, but it is a fun show to watch and every once in a while there is a really good standalone episode.

Homicide: Life on the Street: A show from the 90s that I didn't watch growing up, but I started watching it, then went and got the whole series. Watched it and fell in love. I like watching Law & Order shows because they are simple and entertaining and sometimes they surprise you, and on the surface Homicide appears to be a show like that, but it is actually a show about the detectives and while the murders are a large part of the show, there is a lot of care put into characters development.

Southland: This show just aired its first episode earlier this week. I was intersted because it was advertised as "taking you behind the badge," so I figured it could be like Homicide. It is kinda like Homicide, but it focuses mostly on regular cops on the street instead of detectives (though there are detectives that get some story time as well) which is interesting. My main complaint about the first episode was that it seemed very rushed and that it seemed really important for the writers to wrap up all the events of the episode. I hope this is just the case with the pilot episode and that the rest of the series doesn't feel the need to tie up all the loose ends every episode, but if it does I don't know if I'll continue to watch it.

Arrested Development: No matter how many times I watch the shows over, I see something different. Very well written comedy. Too bad it got axed early..

House: If I remember to catch it when it comes on, I enjoy it.

Law & Order:SVU: Same with House.

Married..with Children: Oldie but goodie. Bundys 4 lif3.

Good thread.

Kingdom Hospital, huh? I assume you mean the original series (can't remember which country this was out of). I watched the American version as filtered through Stephen King - it was decent but I lost track of it when they changed nights and never saw the end. It was pretty decent at first but was getting kinda weak by the time I lost track (Bill Buckner episode, I'm looking at you...).

I saw the first episode of Pushing Diasies and thought it was quite charming as well. But again I missed the second and therefore didn't want to play 'catch up' for the rest of the season. Is this show even still on (weird that you'd bring it up though - I just asked the same question to a friend last night)?

Currently I only watch three or four (depending on what you count as a series) shows:

LOST - while it hasn't been able to match the eerie sense of mystery from the first season I still love this program. I have no problem waiting for answers - if anything I think this season is giving them up to quickly. Excellent characterization and an interesting plotline should keep me around through the final two seasons. If I have any complaints or concerns about LOST its that:

- I think they altered their original story somewhat around the third season because of...
..the way they built up Libby as a character with an intriguing background teaser and then killed her off. I blame Michelle Rodriguez for getting arrested, which in my totally uninformed opinion lead to her character being killed off early, which in turn somehow lead to Libby's character getting offed (converging storylines maybe?). Anyway it just seems like they intended to go somewhere with it but never did
- I hope they eventually address all the lingering issues they've developed over the years (i.e. the significance of the black and white stones from the first season, who the corpses found in the cave where, that freaking 'monster')

Heroes - I watched this from season one after being exposed to all the hype and was surprised to find it was pretty decent - it was more 'what if people had abilities' then 'look I'm a superhero'. Unfortunately the series took a dive with the final episode of season 1 (most anti-climatic confrontation ever) and hasn't looked back since. What remains is idiotic - characters have no consistency in what they say, think, or do and constantly make the dumbest decisions possible. Characters and plotlines are introduced and dropped shortly after without any explanation or further mention (i.e. Molly, that Irish girl Peter met in season 2). Doubtly unfortunate is the fact that I feel compelled to continue to watch this train wreck - even while finding it reprehensible.

Dollhouse - I'm a big Josh Whedon fan (see below) so after missing FIrefly I decided to give this a shot. It's been slow to develop and seems to be missing Whedon's trademark humor but has been coming along as of late - it's kind of like a reversed Quantum Leap. I'm pretty satisfied so far but I'm not sure what kind of long term potential the concept has.

Subterranean - not a series but it plays new music from indie bands so I find it ever so useful for finding new acts

Aside from these I'll occassionally get sucked into episodes of Law and Order but I get enough of that from work so I usually avoid cop/crime shows like the plague

Old shows

The only thing I feel worth mentioning is Buffy/Angel/Firefly. I first saw Buffy when they started playing reruns during the short period of time I spend getting ready for work. I had no actual interest in the show initially but since everthing seems that much more interesting when compared with work I actually gave it a shot. As it turned out I found it to be really quite endearing. The show had interesting characters and quick clever writing - it wasn't long before I started watching the new episodes of it and Angel. I didn't think Firefly sounded that interesting initially so I never watched it during it's short TV run. Since then I've been exposed to the series via DVD and found it was vintage Whedon: great characters, interesting plotlines, great writing. While I think Buffy had run it's course I still think its a shame Angel and Firefly got the axe so early.

That show was canceled some time ago. It was on it's second season when it got canned. You could've streamed the episodes on the ABC website when it was still on.

I thought about watching PD online but for some reason it doesn't work on my busted arse PC. Do you know if the storyline was finished before it got canned or if it was just dropped mid-plotline? If it's the former maybe I'll look into the inevitable DVD release.

NCIS - Gibbs is just so hot and he is so great...

Millenium - I bought all three seasons of it on DVD for AU$70 - it was a money well spent. I remember watching this on the tv and my partner said that it is better than the X-files in a lot of ways.

The Cook and the Chef - Yes, I did end up watching a cooking show, and started to own a decent amount of recipe books. This show gives lots of inspiration and I am loving it very much.

Thank God You're Here - You dress someone in a costume and get then step through the door to the world they know nothing about - and then hilarity ensues. xD If you are sad, or need something to laugh at, this is a perfect show.
They have an individual challenge and then a group challenge where all the performers do it together xD
Yes, Aussie one is the original and better one :p

Been on a bit of British TV kick recently although I don't actually watch them on my TV *cough*

Spaced - comedy series by Edgar Wright and starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. If you liked Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, you'll probably like this (as I did).

Qi - a quiz show where it's impossible to get any of the questions right - because the commonly-believed 'right' answers are actually wrong. Sounds odd but it's actually very entertaining. And of course it's hosted by Stephen Fry, taking a pretty good idea into awesome territory.

You can actually get Spaced on DVD here in the US (which is how I watched it). I'm also looking to get my hands on some old BBC DVDs...A Bit of Fry and Laurie is first on my hitlist.

House: Every time you think the writers would run out ideas they manage to innovate on a very tired formula and keeps the audience engaged. Plus, you can't really go wrong with Hugh Laurie being bitter and cantankerous.

Life: Another Brit playing Yank with Damien Lewis as a police officer who was wrongly jailed for murder. Being released after 12 years with a large settlement and a badge, he has revenge on his mind. Chances are, the show just got cancelled after two seasons, but 95% of all the plotlines have been tied up, I guess the writers knew the jig was up.

Entourage: Well, it's Entourage, the good life, Sex and the City for guys.

Spongebob Squarepants: Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?

Various cooking shows: Because I like cooking.

Wouldn't you like to know... *creepy gin* I might be hiding behind a bush and making crow noises whenever you pass by...
Nah, I am just quoting a Foxtel Commercial.

I am not getting a foxtel, though. Neither of us watch enough TV to make it worth it.

Watch it in a heartbeat:

Supernatural - Is a fun watch for the brothers, the pop culture references and the grimdark world.

NCIS - I'll put it way above the CSI franchise because it put all of its characters to good use, and all of them were allowed to shine at some point.

House - Late in the party, but damn now I am loving all minutes of it.

Criminal Minds - It was good until Inigo Montoya left. The new guy who replaced him have a tendency to have the solution served on a silver plate. But I must say that the episode Lucky was my favorite of the Post-Inigo Montoya Criminal Minds.

Sarah Connor Chronicles - Enki says it all.

Occasionally watch it:

CSI: Miami : Only for David Caruso's one-liners.

Bones: For the chemistry between Bones and the guy who used to be Angel in Buffy the Vampire Slayers.

Quit watching:

Lost: Well... They are litterally.. Lost.

Never watched and don't intend to:

Heroes: Never drawn to watch it and hearing my siblings bitching about the lastest development makes me think I have not missed so much.

Will never watch even with a loaded shotgun in the mouth:

Desperate Housewives

Grey's Anatomy - Now you are seeing a pattern in shit I hate in my TV series.

Fun and will watch it every single time it get re-aired:

Malcolm in the Middle

Married with Children

Tour of Duty

Felt it could have been better:

Rome Great characters, I am a sucker for historical drama. But my god, could they just tone down the number of sex scenes? It not only served little purpose but it also distracted from the actual plot.
