Toys: Keep or play?

I've noticed in my old age, at the horror of seeing my toys decompose, a tendency to hoard my new toys, not even opening them, and just being proud to seeing them on the shelf in perfect condition.

The thing is...

I haven't actually played with them

Though I have a feeling I would just pose them a few times and then they would gather dust, fall over and get scratched etc, which is exactly what I don't want

the theory is that they also retain value. Once opened, the value drops. Box, unopened, sealed, you know how it goes on ebay.

But value for who, my grandchildren?

Would they even appreciate it?

What do you think?

i think that unless you buy something with the idea of selling it to get a profit once it gets rare or whatever, having them unopened is a bit, i don't know, sad? I mean at a certain age it's not like we are going to play with them to the extend of ruining them; i think at least checking around the toy a couple of times then putting it back in the box to have it protected is the norm to have a minimal satisfaction from the purchase.*

* I'm saying this as the person that 2 days ago bought on a whim(influenced by the other toy thread i guess) 2 little trasformers for 5€ each. The first toys i bought in 15 years or so, trasformed them twice maybe, had them standing in robot form near each other, probably never going to touch them again, but it sure felt nice! Also they are pretty well done for that price!

I don't buy toys myself but my best friend collects toys, comics, and baseball cards. He tells me that he's saving the cards to give to his son - I can't wait to see his face when the boy pins a Roger Clemens rookie card to his bike spokes.

Moral of this story is: don't refrain from enjoying your purchases for the purpose of saving them for children. They either won't care or will destroy your precious

I was going to answer with a picture to make things obvious, but I'm too lazy to go take a picture. Basically, I take stuff out of the package and screw around with it for a bit, then if it is cool I put it around my computer desk in some pose. I don't really care if it would have been worth money later had I left it in the box because I wouldn't want ot sell them anyway. Lately I've just been getting gundam models more than anything.

Decisions, Decisions.....

I am still confused...

If it is an ultra rare toy or a figure (not action figures), I'll have t6o keep it....

If it is a non figure, I'll play with it...

same with Bugle, play for 1-2 days, then it goes to the display shelf.

I guess depends of the age.

When i was a kid, the urge to play with them was impossible to quench. I couldn't stand have them packed there and lay there motionless. I had to play with them. No matter what.

Almost 20 years later...

I don't mind seeing some of my old toys, even if I play with them before, back in their boxes, perhaps with some scratches and whatnot... but a reminiscence of my good ol' times and how much I enjoyed playing with them.

Yup, I still keep some back in Mexico.

I don't keep them in the box unless the box itself is part of the display. It all adds to the value of the toy itself if kept in-box, but unless you're a collector (and/or one guy who bought the toy itself and planning to sell them on eBay for outrageous prices) then I see no point in putting your toys inside the box and displaying the box instead of the toy itself.

WTF toys? How old are u ppl?

I haven't bought any toys or figures or crap since I was in middle school, and even then I felt too old for them. The last time I bought anything even close was a plush kobun and I only bought it to throw at people.

Considering that I would have to destroy the plastic casing that holds my Benoit and Iori figures, I guess I have to admit I'm a collector and perhaps when I'm really poor, a trader.

Should have bought spares to play with and stick on the shelf.

It's funny how (some) women will disapprove but men will ogle and basically go nuts...

men will always have toys. They just get more expensive in value.

Funny you say that. I just watched this show about guys who love (emotionally and physically) their RealDolls (essentially a 6K sex mannequin). The one guy had a real girlfriend and they taped him revealing to her that he has (and uses) like six of these things. On camera she was all "Oh I support his decision and don't think less of him" then the narrator revealed she dropped him a week later.

Wonder if she would have been cool with it if he keep 'em in their original packaging?

I've seen RealDolls. Those things are just creepy and sick.

The things I would do to a sex doll would make Chris Benoit cry
