Uruguay nowadays isn't half the team it used to be. It's only average. And Australia's a little better than it used to be, or so I've heard. I sincerely can't guess who's gonna win...

Indeed, on Pro Evolution Soccer 4, there is little difference between them, ratings-wise. Both have weak defence, but have potentially excellent offense.

Schwarzer > Carini

But Forlan/Zalayeta/Silva > Viduka/Aloisi

And here are the draws for the Europe playoffs.

Spain v Slovakia

Switzerland v Turkey

Norway v Czech Republic

I hope Switzerland beat Turkey, Spain beat Slovakia, and Czech Republic beat Norway.

uruguay have a world class squad. a lot of their players are regulars in big clubs, no?

juve's montero and oliveira, real's carlos diogo and garcia, inter's recoba, villareal's forlan. theyre all good players.

australia need to rely on cahill and bresciano. aside from that theyre completely outclassed. plus, its also a disadvantage that guus has only been coach for a short time.

Montero doesn't play for Juve anymore, but that's not the point. I still think it's a fairly even contest, even if one or two of Uruguay's players are more famous, doesn't mean they are world class now.

Compare the squads for yourself.

Uruguay

Goalkeepers: Fabian Carini (Cagliari), and Sebastian Viera (Villarreal).

Defenders: Alejandro Lago (Rosenborg), Dario Rodriguez (Schalke 04), Diego Lopez (Cagliari), Diego Lugano (Sao Paulo), Paolo Montero (San Lorenzo), and Guillermo Rodriguez (Atlas).

Midfielders: Pablo Garcia (Real Madrid), Oscar Morales (Valladolid), Ruben Olivera (Juventus), Martin Parodi (Al Ali), Diego Perez (Monaco), Alvaro Recoba (Inter Milan), Gustavo Varela (Schalke 04), and Javier Delgado (Saturn).

Strikers: Diego Forlan (Villarreal), Marcelo Zalayeta (Juventus), Javier Chevanton (Monaco), Fabian Estoyanoff (Cadiz), Josemir Lujambio (Banfield), Richard Morales (Malaga), Mario Regueiro (Valencia), Vicente Sanchez (Toluca), Richard Nunez (Cruz Azul), and Dario Silva (Portsmouth).

Australia

Goalkeepers: Mark Schwarzer (Middlesbrough), Zeljko Kalac (AC Milan)

Defenders: Steve Laybutt (Gent), Stan Lazaridis (Birmingham City), Jon McKain (Politechnica AEK Timisoara), Ljubo Milicevic (FC Thun), Craig Moore (Newcastle United), Lucas Neill (Blackburn Rovers), Tony Popovic (Crystal Palace), Tony Vidmar (NAC Breda),

Midfielders: Marco Bresciano (Parma), Tim Cahill (Everton), Scott Chipperfield (FC Basel), Brett Emerton (Blackburn Rovers), Vince Grella (Parma), Joel Griffiths (Neuchatel Xamax), Harry Kewell (Liverpool), Jade North (Newcastle United Jets), Saso Petrovski (Sydney FC), Josip Skoko (Genclerbirligi), Luke Wilkshire (Bristol City)

Strikers: John Aloisi (Alaves), Jason Culina (FC Twente), Ahmad Elrich (Fulham), Archie Thompson (Melbourne Victory), Michael Thwaite (National Bucuresti), Mark Viduka (Middlesbrough)

Very even, I'm sure you'd agree. Uruguay would be favourites, but it's still too close to call. And saying that Uruguay have a world class squad just because a few of their players play for big clubs is a moot point, as several Australian players also play for big clubs (Kewell - Liverpool, Kalac - AC Milan, Moore - Newcastle), and I wouldn't consider the latter two world class.

the problem for australia is that they dont have any creative forces outside of cahill and bresciano (and maybe emerton,) and their defence is still suspect. uruguay's defence is awesome - garcia is playing like makelele/vieira, diogo has nice pace, montero has the experience, and logic should imply that they play better as a team since their coach has been there for longer. also, you can't discount their attack and goalkeepers.

kewell has been out for ages and he's played like shat for 'pool, so... i dunno. i hope australia wins though.

btw, gluck for ACCESS.

I'm completely heartbroken by Arsenal's defeat at West Brom.

The era is over? Not too much wrong in that statement as far as I can tell... But half the first team squad was out! :( Still think we can smite Man. United... *Hopes*

wats ACCESS?

And it's true the South Americans would be more creative than us, but keep in mind, Uruguay during the WC qualifying stages did not win one away game out of a possible 9. If they can't even win away to neighbours in their own continent, how can they win half-way around the world in Sydney? I have the utmost confidence we'll win in Australia, and probably lose in Uruguay. It all comes down to away goals, and if they're even, we have the advantage since the 2nd leg is here.

Anyway, I'll place bets on Australia to qualify.

ahhhh sorry. i meant ENTER.

south american crowds are notoriously difficult to play with... though i doubt australia can pull off the win, there's still a chance. i'd go and watch it if i didnt have any stupid exams, but shit happens. :(
