It doesn't have have ninja and has action in like 5 eps out of 24, but i need to recommend Gankutsuou to everyone.
It's the Count of Montecristo in a futuristic setting, and it's one of the more interesting and deep anime i've ever seen.Oh and obviously, Samurai Champloo ;)

Can someone pls elaborate a bit more about Champloo? It just seems like a samurai anime to me... what's the gimmick?

Well yeah, SC is at heart just a samurai anime, but it has some more modern, non-Edo era stuff mixed in (most prominent of which is the hip-hop soundtrack). It's funny because they do it in a way that sort of makes you believe that it could have existed back then even if it's totally made up.

That's basically the focus of the series; there's a main plot in there but it only shows up in a select few episodes. I liked it though, because the characters are likable and the fights are almost always good.

EDIT: oh yeah, and since its in my av now I might as well recommend Yakitate! Japan. It's about baking, but it's extremely hilarious at times. I almost didn't stick with it because the first few episodes are really slow, but before I knew it I was hooked. Yeah it's not a samurai show but there IS a samurai baker in it :P

You better watch Champloo ep 23. Fukin hillarious ep ever! Make you wish the series last longer than 26.

Have any1 heard about Karas? Anime-Kraze just released a promo #2 & damn this anime looks sooo bloody awesome. Similar animation quality found in GITS. Can't wait for it! At least it has a sword on it. :p

Samurai X is always worth rereading... Then I believe Slam Dunk is worth a look at too.

GTO... Yeah that's about it.

I find more recent mangas to be... boring?

Boogiepop Phantom = the closest thing to what a mindfuck anime should be.

I checked out the first episode, I see what they mean about "cheap" mindfucks. It's just because it's very visual as opposed to being subtle (A bus that grows legs hmmm). I'll check it out though... this looks very old though... isn't this 2004?

Now boogiepop phantom... why did I not watch it when it first came out??? *can't remember* I'm sure I talked to Oro about it...

right I'm just finishing off eva renewal, then I'll get champloo. *keeps an eye out for Karas*

DONT WATCH ELFEN LIED!!!

Question: Is Champloo something that would be significantly edited if placed on television? Reason I ask is because Cartoon Network is now running SC as part of their Adult Swim lineup. Generally Adult Swim doesn't edit their anime too much (or at least not as much as the rest of CN) but I don't want to start watching this if it's gonna be a hacked mess (I'd rather just buy the unedited version). Inversely, if it'd make a decent translation to TV than I might as well save my money and watch it for free.

I'm not directly familiar with the situation in the US, but more than violence the show talks quite liberally about sexual behaviours, homosexuality, brothels and such, sometimes in a humorous way, sometimes not, and for whole episodes.
Oh and it's quite violent too, just nothing really overboard.

Well, if that hooligan fondling the serving girl's teat in the first episode wasn't cut out of the CN showings then you could probably expect very few changes.

I've started watching Yakitate Japan, which looks like decent fun.... but Speed Grapher, I'm more intrigued by it's distopian adult story...
Uh yeah, Melody of Oblivion can wait.
