twas quite shocked that marseille lost 2 games, but in their defence theyve gone through 2 new coaches and lost their best player in the form of benoit pedretti. their squad is now full of unproven players (sans barthez, who is half stupid and half excellent) and they might be in for a relegation battle.

for traditional old firm powerhouses, celtic are underperforming. but they have a good squad and a proven EPL manager, so things will eventually go right.

Now for a preview of other leagues:

Germany:
After watching Werder Bremen's five goals on the weekend, i've become convinced that every team in the bundesliga other than the big 4 (or 5 depending on what you think about schalke) defends like rubbish and provide no real depth for the league. most of the goals in this league seem to come from poor clearances and/or bad positioning by defenders. some of the goalkeepers are clowns too. Its going to be mighty Bayern Munich on top this year. The fact is that they're head over heels above the rest. and no one cares about the rest, beleive me.

Italy:
would probably be the best league in the world if it wasnt so damn boring. it's going to be a competitive season, with Inter Milan bolstering their squad with 3 Madrid players. Good on them for getting 3 top class players. Figo has 2 years left in him, Solari is a genuinely skilled player who was underused, and Samuel is world class - another victim of politics at Real Madrid. however, Madrid's loss is truly Inter's game (Edit: gain... duh). Kudos to Milan for adding Vieri, Gilardino and the super versatile Jankulovski to their illustrious player list (and wage bill.) Expect a tight 3 horse race with Palermo, Sampdoria, Fiorentina and Cagliari on the up. Finally. An Italian season that might have some real attacking flair.

Spain:
another Barca vs. Real season. As a Barca supporter, i'm glad real have unbalanced their team yet again, selling Samuel and buying Robinho and Baptista at the bargain price of $75 million. Is Baptista better than Owen? I think not. But he is versatile and will operate efficiently with Gravesen in the center of midfield. Here's hope that Owen gets sold to a Non-Man Utd, Newcastle, Everton (heh,) Tottenham and Chelsea EPL club. Defense has always been a problem with the Merengues, and this close season has worsened the situation.

Barca will be brilliant as always, with their attacking swerve and added panache with van Bommel. In Puyol, Xavi, Ronaldinho and Eto'o, they have four loyal world class players that Chelsea will never be able to buy out. If they would buy another centreback, they would be THE complete team. Again, the rest of the spots will be taken by the two Seville clubs (Betis and Sevilla,) Athelico Madrid and Valencia, who proved that Raneiri really isn't quite that good.

English:
Vieira leaving: Arsenal's loss or a shrewd bit of business? Personally, i vote the latter. The man is almost 30. He's been indifferent in form recently and may well benefit from a change in surroundings. All eyes are on the big 3 again - Arsenal have complimented their attacking play with Alaiksander Hleb (good work, son. leaving the bundesliga is always good ^_^) and it looks as if wonderkid Fabregas may well be able to replace the old Frenchman. Hopefully Senderos will mature this season, effectively clearing up Arsenal's defensive problems. I wish Wenger would alter his philosophy of playing a striker deep and just sign Owen. Henry and Owen? Chelsea should be worried.

Speaking of Chelsea, are they arrogant bastards or what? 'One horse race.' pffft. They paid more for Shaun Wright Phillips than they should have (15 million tops) and of course look to be stronger this year. Fantasy football managers must be drooling and buying Chelsea's rearguard like mad (for good reason though.) Mourinho is an asshole, but he's a good manager.

Man Utd for once are a club in decline. Park Ji Sung is a great buy, although it remains to be seen if he's too small to play in the EPL. Ferdinand finaly signed his contact (120,000 pounds a week - not bad) but isnt quite the defender he claims to be. It looks like it's up to Rooney and Ronaldo to save Man Utd from mediocricy this year. Poor Alan Smith... :'(

Boca Juniors is the gayest soccer team in the face of earth :/ And its fanbase is even worse.

Why is it hate everton is so hateable? Is it because they think theyre better than Liverpool? vote yes.

I'm personally surprised to see that Valerenga beat Brugge 1-0, but I expect a 2/3 goal reverse back in Belgium.

The two real matches to watch here are Everton vs. Villareal and Betis vs. Monaco. You watch the former match to see Everton get their asses whooped and watch the other because its worthy of a UEFA Cup Final.

Damn, my boys (Liverpool) have a very hard draw. Belgian champs Anderlecht, English champs Chelsea, and 3rd placed Spanish team Real Betis. Barcelona should finish top easily in their group, but will be interesting to see who progresses with them out of Bremen, Udinese, and Panathinaikos. Inter Milan's group is laughably easy, whilst AC Milan's is quite tough. Rematches of the two semi-finals of last season will occur in PSV Vs AC Milan and Liverpool Vs Chelsea.

But the big story is Diego Forlan's return to Old Trafford. Leaving Man U as a failure, he then becomes top scorer of the La Liga. A hattrick is on the cards for Diego as he returns to face his old team, IMO.

Not an unattractive looking draw.
I don't think PSV will stand a chance against milan this time around. The team's lost their best players over the summer.
Ajax had a good match, 3-1 win over Brondy. However, the team needs work. Too many youngsters, people making too many rookie mistakes and losing possesion. But they're starting to play sexy again like the old days so that's good.

Remember 2 seasons ago when they lost Kezman and Robben? I bet you said the same thing, and they made it to the semis. Now they lose Van Bommel and Park, but they'll still do well, IMO.

Chelsea are not immune this time around. Liverpool have always put up a good game against them, and Betis have the mecurial Joaquin to combine with Ricardo Oliveira. If Arsenal manage to beef up their midfield, this could be their lucky year.

btw, it won't be so easy for PSV this time around but Guus Hiddink is a genius, so have a little faith in them.

My Predictions

Group A
1. Juventus
2. Bayern München
3. Brugge
4. Vienna

Group B
1. Arsenal
2. Sparta Prague
3. Ajax
4. FC Thun

Group C
1. Barcelona
2. Udinese
3. Bremen
4. Panathinakos

Group D
1. Villarreal
2. Manchester United
3. Lille
4. Benfica

Group E
1. AC Milan
2. Schalke 04
3. PSV
4. Fenerbahce

Group F
1.Real Madrid
2.Lyon
3.Rosenborg
4.Olympiakos

Group G
1.Liverpool
2.Betis
3.Chelsea
4.Anderlecht

Group H
1.Inter
2.Rangers
3.Porto
4.Artmedia Bratislava

roffles @ Villarreal topping group while Chelsea go out. I'd love to see it, but no, I don't think so.

I'm thinking of buying some soccer kits, just for casual wear. Some of them look pretty damn cool (PSG Home, Ajax Away), and if I'm gonna wear a plain white shirt, it may as well be a Liverpool one. Just wondering if those shops in Asia that sell fake clothes would have smaller soccer teams' kits (PSG, Deportivo) instead of the just the big English clubs and Real Madrid.

and the way Chelsea have been playing this season, I wouldnt be surprised at all. they've had nothing but dumb luck in every game except vs. West Brom.

Am I the only person who thinks sports kit as casual wear is extremely ugly? Most of the time the colours can't be chosen as teams are obliged to wear certain colours, so supporters of teams with garish colours or patterns are screwed. Sometimes clubs luck out and select colours and patterns that are classy and easy on the eye (barca, ac milan. brazil), but there's others that are just downright criminal (borussia dortmund, celtic, werder bremen). Most damning though, is that even footballers don't look particularly good wearing football kit! Let's face it, most football shirts are baggy and loose to allow for air circulation. Unfortunately, baggy clothes just ain't sexay! Then again, neither is your average football suporter... I dunno, if you like it then go nuts, but to me they're fugly.

On the other hand those retro football shirts from the 60s/70s/80s, the ones that are basically crew neck t-shirts, those are cool. The USSR one is the coolest in my opinion, followed by argentina. Hard to find a USSR one though :(
