Although the OP is from 2005. . . I still think this is a good question for those that have just caught a look.

Still play KOF2k2UM online is fun for a fling if you can fill your friends list with decent pings and just troll player matches.

Looking to give 13 a really good try once it's released.

Didn't someone say that DOA 4 supports online communities where you can watch people fight in spectator modes and talk and stuff? Online fighters need this addictive component that MMORPGs have..namely the community. (not to mention fresh competition) Kinda like the arcade communities of old, but online. I'm not sure how this will be done but it must be done and I think it will be done. Now that next gen is upon us. Namely xbox 360...and xbox Live is the best online console service. Let's look at what Live does in the future. Not too long from now, we'll be using fiber optics and wifi connections. Internet speed will increase and one day lag will disappear. Imagine playing games like XI and VF5 with no lag. We need to get to that place. And the old generation's fanbase must support the new gen. New gen does exist I think. I see them at places like S-C but they don't play at the arcades like we do/did. It's also interesting to see a lot of US's ex-Capcom fans joining the ranks of SNK fans.

I have Samsho V xbox pre-ordered. The fact that SNK's turn around time for ports have been tremendously reduced when compared to the old days...it shows that SNKP is trying to get their act together. (how long did it take for 2K to be ported? And they're even porting 94RE and apparently they're even planning on 98 Rebout) So it's not fair to say that they're not trying I think. Just think about how much money they make from their fighters. Their profit margin is niche at best. If you want GG sprites in kof for all the characters then you're gonna need more time than 1.5 years since kof has the biggest roster in any fighter period. I personally like the NGBC sprites and XI's Oswald sprite. As a matter of fact, NGBC doesn't look worse to me than CVS2. Not that I think that's a major accomplishment. And besides, sure GG looks great. But the GG scene is so quiet. And everyone is ignoring modern looking games like Fist of the North Star and Rumble Fish 2. (does RF2 count?)

My goodness, I'm ranting. Anyway the point is that SNKP recently brought back that magical 98 presentation along with good gameplay. And XI's not even a dreammatch yet. Plus we have 3 SNK games in SBO: SS Tenka, XI, NGBC. They're all tournament worthy fighters with quality gameplay and great presentation. Good presentation and good gameplay for 3 consecutive games? XI's tag combos and 6 spirits in Tenka and NGBC's DAs are all pretty fresh overhauls IMO. Besides I think KOF might get a sprite overhaul not too long from now...maybe...hopefully. I play SNK fighters somewhat frequently and I think I always will...on my online consoles...not the arcade. (distance, laziness, gas price, busy, bad sticks, poor competition etc.)
even though you wrote this in 2005. almost every thing you said about the future of fighting games is happening now
I'm impressed xmad

the current era of gaming? as much as i agree that snk needs to "get with the times", the current era of gaming is a mixed bag of shit and turds and occasional drops of chocolate chip, but it's hard to make out which parts are the chocolate chip, and by that time you wouldn't even bother eating the chocolate because it's already touched a few turds.

current era of gaming somehow means trying to be more inviting to an audience that otherwise doesn't even care about games in the first place. i can understand trying to get a broader audience, but trying to feed the lowest common denominator? that's the mistake people tend to make these days, and it becomes nothing more than a mess of qte's and other safe-for-your-fingers mechanics that are supposed to bring in the people whose only gaming interest is sitting on a train and fiddling with angry birds or solitaire to pass the time. meanwhile, this alienates the core audience who fell in love with actually playing a game, and while a lot of these people end up biting the bullet, in the end, it just pleases nobody at all, because the casual audience didn't care in the first place and the company gave the middle finger to its "harder core" audience, and the company can't figure out where that happy medium is. and then you see floods of people bitching about it on youtube.

i'm fed up with snk's business strategy just the same, but not for the exact same reasons you are.

in order to accomplish the "expanded roster" AND updated graphics at the same time, this actually goes into discussing the "assembly line" where the more that's in demand is inversely proportional to the quality with respect to set deadlines, which unfortunately mires a lot of company products COUGH sf x tekken. people can do one or the other or they can spend a lot of time doing both, but "the current era of gaming" involves strict deadlines, unfortunately, and if these deadlines seem a little fussy, you can take that up with the company board room.

yeah, they can spend a lot of time on a game, but if their budget can't afford a long production time, they can't accommodate as easily as you might want them to, and anyone who's ever worked in a business before would feel this more. this involves having to take up side projects to make up for lost money on building a project that's taking them a long time, thus possibly costing them more in the long run.

on the other hand, what you are probably asking for is for them to pump out something in 3d, which is in fact the demand of the "current era of gaming" and 3d modeling is inexpensive, easy to produce, flexible, and still recyclable!

the best snk can do is try to keep its current audience, however small, and little by little, give a little wave to other people in hopes that they notice.

and bigger roster doesn't always mean the better game. in fact, you can tell that the bigger roster in some games has become inversely proportional to the quality of integration. with respect to deadlines.

there's a reason people say that "king of fighters xiii", despite being one of the easier kof games to play, is the "more honest" fighting game of this generation.
