What do you look for in a character?

Just an interesting question that dawned on me last night.
Every time a new fighting game comes out there will be a particular character people tend to opt for certain types of characters again and again. What influences the types of character you pick?
(mods, plz move this if you think it should be elsewhere)

My inmediate option is the playing style. I've seen characters with good design but COMPLETELY TERRIBLE (or boring) GAMEPLAY (i.e. LB2's Setsuna), or characters with
-ass design but good moves (i.e. 2k's Ramon).
If a character is interesting in his/her gameplay, I inmediately choose them.
2nd would be... the design
And I think I don't need to put examples, because everyone here knows what I'm talking about

It tends to vary quite wildly.
For instance, in KOF2002, my team tends to be composed of characters like Terry, Ryo, Kusanagi, etc who have a relatively small learning curve. However, I also occasionally choose characters like K', Kula and Ramon whose designs appeal to me but whose gameplay is more technical. In such cases I tend to try and pick up the gameplay bit by bit so I can use the characters who I think are cool.
Similarly when I play 2K3 I use K' (easy to use/cool), Ryo (easy to use), Terry (easy to use/cool) and Shen Woo (cool). So my choice usually tends to be a combination of multiple factors.
Another example is how I primarily use Axl in GGXX in spite of being quite lousy at GGXX - his design appealed to me, so I took it upon myself to learn his tricks, no matter how hard that might be.

Used to be:
- Can they throw you and it hurts a lot? (When I was like 9)
- Tired of seeing the same people, so I'll pick someone different. (Semi recently, newer games it was more of a choice to play them in strange modes, K/P Gouki)
Now I just play people who appeal to everyone, so people wanna see me play, failing that (I.E. that shit is boring to pick) a charge character / grappler / oddity.

Donuts.
Seems that the only constant characters I use are Kim and Ryo.
I like Kim for his versatility, Ryo for his stableness. I used to think that I am a defensive player.
Though in later stages, I will sort of graduate Ryo but not Kim. During this stage, I often choose technical fighters. (or characters with some BS yet somewhat hard to use that they aren't popular top tiers.)
Perhaps I am just a closet brainless, mindless rushdown wannabe.XD

I mostly choose chars with interesting gameplay, but indeed that's too simplicistic. If i don't really feel like losing against that cheap asshole i might be cheap myself and pull a Beni-Kim-Iori, but if i'm confident enough i'll use a Yama-Hinako-Shen or an Angel-Kyo-Whip. It... depends on the mood, really.
And design can be important, too. I was pretty lousy with Angel in 2k1, but when she got the mighty Mayumi Shintani i became pretty focused with her!
...At the moment i'm pretty rusty tho' :/

strong female with odd gameplay... well, not odd, more like entertaining, non hadouken/shoryuken gameplay.
The gameplay must not revolve around long combos, its simply not my style.
Vanessa,Rosa, Bjenet, Elizabeth,Mary come to mind.
if they dont fit my gameplay standard, the design has to be strong enough for me to use her.
Example, Oswald looks great but I dont intent to learn them 1st, Like I will do with elizabeth. same with momoko, while it looks like the style can be interesting, the design is a big turnoff for me.

I want them to look uniquely terrifying.
Like Iori.
Like Setsuna.
Like Moriya.
Like Akuma.
How they control is completely irrelevant, I like the way they look, I use them. Sometimes their stories will intrigue me too... But obviously, there wasn't much to say about both Iori and Setsuna... and Moriya. XP
All loners. Strong, powerful, independent... Sheesh, I sound like i'm...

To be frank, I tend to play everyone. I have some favorite characters, but since I'm not a "serious" player, I have the most fun playing random or trying to use every character in a game. Because of that, it's obvious that my favorite characters are the ones whose designs appeal to me. Interesting gameplay comes at a second place, though.

I mostly play a lot of random, so I get to use most characters a few times, learnt hem a little, then move onto other characters, the ones that inetrest me the most I *might* pick up willingly sometimes, but it's mostly random for me. What can I say, most of the characters have their certain appeal, it also may depend on the mood :p
