Confirmed @XianMSG will be at #IVGC + #SF4U

Thanks to the Versus Dojo (@VersusDojo) our main tournament qualifier partner, we’re happy to announce that Kun Xian Ho AKA “Xian” (@XianMSG) will join us for this first International Video Game Cup.

(Huh….. wonder who will win out of Bala vs Xian? Only one way to find out…)

Xian is the most successful player of 2013, before & after his victory at the Super Street Fighter IV AE v.2012 EVO Championships, he took the world by storm with his Gen, a character now considered one of the best in the game thanks to his innovative gameplay discoveries.
Xian did so much this year that all the fighting game fans can now recognize his face and the flag of his country: Singapore.

Street Fighter Ultra will be there as a location test too. Joy.

The Future of the Cannes Event

When we started to organize video games contests in Cannes in 2002, nobody though much of the project: it was just another stop on the Xbox League tournament series, another notch on Microsoft‘s belt for its conquest of the European market.

It was in Cannes in the South of France, far away from Paris and it was to be run at the Palais des Festival et des Congrès de Cannes (“that famous place with the movie thing”), during the Festival International des Jeux (International Games Festival), an international trade show all about board games and role playing games, with tournaments like Chess & Crosswords.

But it was a novelty, a first for the local community, so players got curious: the games were new and shiny & the cash-prize was good. And so they came!

You all know the story from that point: in 2004 the WorldGameCup was born, the brainchild of Guillaume “Asenka” Dorison and his team, given form from their experience with various tournaments for Sega & Microsoft & the bus full of players from the CTPL (ConsoleLeague.com) forums.

Since then the tournament has grown, it came back in 2006, then in 2010 and the format was passed on to another team this year to build the International Video Game Cup (IVGC), ever-changing but still very much the same.

The Cannes Event is twelve, alive & kicking and we’ve got big news for you ;).

Le Futur de l’Event de Cannes

Quand on a commencé à organiser des tournois de jeux vidéo à Cannes en 2002, personne n’imaginait ce que deviendrait le projet : c’était juste une nouvelle étape du circuit de la Xbox League, une autre tentative de Microsoft de pénétrer le marché européen.

C’était à Cannes dans le sud de la France, bien loin du tumulte de Paris et ça avait lieu au Palais des Festival et des Congrès de Cannes (“le truc avec les films”), pendant le Festival International des Jeux, un salon consacré aux jeux de société et de rôle avec des tournois d’échec et de mots croisés.

Bref c’était une curiosité pour le joueur moyen, mais aussi une vraie opportunité pour les gameurs locaux qui attirés par les nouveaux jeux et l’argent à gagner sont venus en masse !

Vous devez tous connaitre la suite de l’histoire : en 2004, la WorldGameCup est née de l’imagination de Guillaume “Asenka” Dorison et de son équipe. Un beau projet issu de leur expérience pour Sega & Microsoft et de l’arrivée massive des joueurs du forum de la CTPL (ConsoleLeague.com) dans un car à l’ambiance inimitable.

Depuis le tournoi à grandi, il est revenu en 2006, puis en 2010 et le format a changé de main cette année pour devenir l’International Video Game Cup (IVGC), toujours un peu différent, mais jamais complètement nouveau.

L’évent de Cannes Event a douze ans, mais il est toujours là pour vous accueillir et vous surprendre et nous avons même quelques nouveautés à annoncer ;).
