“So there finally are some official news about Cannes 2014!
As you know Wael Hadj Mouldi, TKO and me (members of the WORLD GAME CUP association’s bureau) have decided to step down after the 2013 edition of the tournament. For months we talked to numerous associations and organizers of the community to check the various options and to dream up the future of the Cannes competition (with organizers we know & trust because they worked on the WGC before).
After several organizers took an option and withdrew, we thought that there simply wouldn’t be anything next year. There are several reasons for it: the tight time-frame and of course the financial side, because the Cannes Event costs money, a lot of money and it’s just hard for an association to make it work.
Quite simply there was no one to take over.
In the end, to offer a real tournament to the players, MT EVENT accepted to take the reins of the project as the main organizer (they were already helping with the organization in 2013), i.e. the “money guys”.
You need to know that the event is at best balanced, and that it sometimes loses a bit of money. This event is run FOR the players and we want to make sure that this seminal tradition continues.
MT EVENT will of course be helped by numerous associations, those that already run tournaments on the various games… just like before. They are motivated and want to do things the right way, with the help of the usual organizers.
The name of the event will be different, because it’s not a tournament run by the WORLD GAME CUP association any more, but it will take place at the SAME VENUE, with, I’m sure, the same eye for quality you’re used to.
MT EVENT will announce the new name of the CANNES EVENT and the full schedule on Friday. [The new name has been announced: it will be called the Cannes Video Game Cup, or #CVGC for short] They just got the green light from Cannes, so be kind & let them get the pieces together.
This is a transitional year, things will be complicated for sure. But keep in mind that MT EVENT is taking over to make sure that the Cannes Event is STILL a tournament you can look up to each year. So please do make sure you go to the event this year.
Aurélien “kurama_tengu”Laureau will still be in charge of the overall communication & international coordination.
The confirmed main event games are for now: SSFIV, UMvC3, KOF XIII and SCV, JUST LIKE LAST YEAR.
As for me, I will of course be there at the venue to help with the stage and the stream, but only as an average guy on holiday ^^.
Even if I hope that with a little help from a few friends from the Versus Dojo (or the SWGA) I can manage to run a few small side tournaments like:
Soulcalibur 1 et 2, SF3.3, SSF2X, GGXX AC R, KOF 2002 UM, MOTW and of course the infamous BREAKERS REVENGE ! I’ll let you know. [Asenka has since confirmed that he will run around 20 small events at the venue, with a small 2€/3€ fee payable on the spot “to make things more interesting”, please contact him directly for details]

Voici enfin, et officiellement, des nouvelles de Cannes 2014 !
Comme vous le savez, Wael Hadj Mouldi, TKO et moi-même (membres du bureau de l’association WORLD GAME CUP) avons décidé de passer la main après l’édition 2013. Pendant des mois, nous avons discuté de diverses solutions avec les autres associations et organisateurs de la communauté pour imaginer ce que pourrait être une nouvelle compétition à Cannes, avec de nouveaux organisateurs (mais ayant déjà bossé sur la WGC).
Après plusieurs options et désistements, nous avons cru qu’il n’y aurait tout simplement rien. Plusieurs raisons à cela : le timing serré et bien sûr le financement, car Cannes coûte cher, très cher et c’est très compliqué pour une association de s’en sortir. Pour faire simple, il n’y avait pas de repreneur.
Finalement, pour tout de même offrir un vrai tournoi aux joueurs, MT EVENT a accepté de reprendre les rennes (ils étaient déjà dans l’orga pour l’édition 2013) comme organisateur principal, c’est à dire “financier”. Il faut savoir que l’event se fait au mieux à l’équilibre, si ce n’est à perte. C’est donc avant tout POUR les joueurs, et pour être certain que la tradition continue.
MT EVENT sera bien sûr appuyé par des associations travaillant déjà avec les diverses communautés en fonction des tournois… exactement comme avant. Ils sont motivés et veulent bien faire les choses, avec les conseils de nombreux organisateurs habitués.
Le nom de la compétition sera différent, parce que ce n’est plus un tournoi de l’association WOLRD GAME CUP, mais il se déroulera au MEME ENDROIT, avec, j’en suis certain, le même souci de qualité pour tout le monde.
MT EVENT annoncera officiellement le nouveau nom du tournoi de CANNES ainsi que le planning détaillé dès vendredi. Ils viennent à peine d’avoir le feu vert de Cannes alors soyez indulgent le temps que tout se mette en place.
C’est une année de transition, ça sera forcément compliqué. Cependant, il est très important de garder en tête le fait que si MT EVENT prend le relais, c’est pour s’assurer que Cannes soit toujours là comme RDV dans l’année. De ce fait, j’invite vraiment tout le monde à vous y rendre cette année.
Aurélien Laureau restera d’ailleurs aux commandes de la communication et des relations avec les étrangers.
Les jeux confirmés pour le moment sont SSFIV, UMVSC3, KOF XIII et SCV en main event, COMME L’AN DERNIER.
Pour ma part, je serai bien sûr sur place pour aider sur la scène et le streaming, mais en simple vacancier ^^ même si avec quelques camarades du versus dojo (ou de SWGA, je vais vous contacter !), j’espère également improviser quelques petits tournois annexes comme :
Soulcalibur 1 et 2, SF3.3, SSF2X, GGXX AC R, KOF 2002 UM, MOTW et bien sûr le fantastique BREAKERS REVENGE ! Je vous tiendrai au courant.
