Soul Calibur V

How do we feel about the new characters? The new guest character? The old ones? Any hype? I've bought every SC up to 4 (which I didn't really like..felt clunky to me), and judging from the videos V looks a little more fluid.

Viola looks cool.

Watch me burn..

Last SC I played was II, the roster was alright. I did see some of the changes in III, but haven't played IV.
I needed a break from SC for awhile anyways. Besides the mode I actually enjoyed from II was gone. Er what's the point of "Tower of Challenges"?
That's what turned me away from IV. Seemed like a weak excuse to beef up some extra mode that doesn't really accomplishing anything.
Wonder if they'll actually bring that rpg type quest back. It actually fit the SC series.

SCV is shaping up to be very impressive, like the game Soul Calibur IV should have been, in my opinion. I've never been much of a SC player (I don't really understand what the general strategy is - footsies, landing combos, what is it?), but I immensely enjoyed SCII, and Ezio guest starring only makes me want to try SCV that much more.

Was that the mode in arcade where you level up and get different weapons etc? I kinda like that mode (never played, just watched when arcade had it)

I look at this game and it kinda give me an idea of how TxS will be like. They should to SCxSS haha!

AFAIK SC was all about rock paper scissors? And all they do is guard and move around?

Actually I didn't think SCIV was all that bad aside from some rather obnoxious business decisions. It wasn't really until people discovered Hilda's ridiculous TOD ring-out that the actual gameplay went sour.

I am a SC player so of course SCV interests me. Hopefully I will still have a speedy rapier user, since Amy has turned into something completely different. Maybe they will restore Raph to his former SC2 glory.

Generally the offensive focus is on mixups, feints, and traps, while the defensive focus is on a balance of guard, sidestep, and guard impact (GI). Defense is mostly about timing and punishment, and knowing how to react to specific moves is very important. A lot of strings have no variation or mixup so learning when to duck or sidestep a certain move is crucial. On offense the goal is to force a mistake in the opponent's timing and capitalize. If you're predictable you'll get GIed or sidestepped and punished.

People seem to mistakenly think it's like Tekken, but unlike that game not a lot of moves will lead to stuff like 50% combos. What intimidates most beginners is losing to a specific move over and over, or they can't get the timing on their defense immediately. No move is 100% unbeatable though. The best aspect of SC is that it's a very broad game, but even once you have the breadth of it under control, it doesn't degenerate into a game of who can land their <whatever> first. There's a lot of give-and-take at high levels.

Of course this is mostly meaningless if you only plan to play online, as any aspect of timing or precision flies out the window. At best you'll only learn how to predict or see certain moves better.

Thanks for the help, Gojira. That kinda was part of my problem with SC - I was confusing it for Tekken with swords and a block button. I've really been trying to diversify in terms of playing my fighting games, because I'd really like to be at least informed with lots of different games. The mind games involved in SC really intrigues me, so I'll definitely be checking out SCV. Thanks again, Gojira! :D

I pre-ordered SC5 last night. I found out my friend is also getting the game so I expect to play her a ton. Not exactly sure who I will play as because most of the characters I mained aren't in the game like Setsuka and Taki. Might just have to use Cervantes or Ivy since I played them a bit too. Not liking how Natsu looks and I expect a ton of pedo stuff headed her direction lol.

I am interested in a few of the new characters like Aeon, Viola, and Zwei. Expect everyone to play Ezio cuz he will be well known and looks pretty cheap.

Wish more folks would give SC a chance, but it seems many turn their noses up at any 3D or anime-ish fighter :(.

Setsuka's moveset is a confirmed unlockable in the game, although Setsuka herself isn't using it (it's actually Patroklos for some reason).

My interest in this game went up by 5% to....5% cos of the inclusion of Devil Jin moveset. Can he wave dash?

Well, if the DJ moveset is anything like Heihachi was in SC2, then I believe he should be able to wavedash. Don't quote me on that, though.
EDIT: Well, as long as you don't mind the "no Create-a-Soul" rule in tournaments/don't plan on entering SC5 tourneys, then don't worry about it too much.

I own SC4 and I really enjoyed the game quite a lot , and I also have Broken Destiny which I admit I never really tapped into a lot but from what I played seemed cool. I snagged a copy of SC2 last year and I enjoyed the little I played with that as well. That being said , VERY excited for SC5. Looking foward to it and all the new things it has to offer to keep me around this time for a long time. It seems like it's going to be the same formula but more towards a fighting game status quo now and the character creation seems a lot better.

I loved the creation in the last games but without body mass choices , heights , and a few more hair styles and choices I couldn't really live out all my custom dreams. This game seems to change that all together. So yeah I'm hype and Ezio was a cool choice though I'm still bitter they didn't pick the TMNT (but with pics , it basically confirms I can make them now so it's a win). And Dampierre? Need I say more?

I pre-ordered the Collector's Edition for pick up at Best Buy (forever alone). Dampierre's Pre-Order Code is exclusive there here in the U.S :D

Please tell me some of you are going to be playing this?

I can't lie, at first I was really hype about the game when I didn't look up info on it. When I found out a lot of the characters from SC3 and 4 are gone it disappointed me. It's just a bit annoying as a long time fan of the series to see what has been going on. Recently I started posting on 8wayrun and it's good to see I'm not the only one who feels this way.

At the end of the day I'm still going to try it out and hope for the best. Even if I have to go back to my roots and play Ivy like the old school days.

Their was a pre-release torny for the game last night, it was pretty cool.

It's true the 2 forms of Patrokalos and whatever his Sister's Name is kind of insulting. And the fact that there's 3 Mimic based characters adds too much salt to the wound. But aside from those 5 I can honestly say for me personally I got everybody I wanted. I mean Zazamel and Yun are probally the 2 characters everyone is pissed off about the most not being in and I can completely understand why from a Gameplay and Storyline perspective. Hell even Rock and his Son should have showed up as they were artwork before the game came out , and Rock's son had a Bow!

Still I think it's safe to say they're going to do some DLC for this game , I don't think it's over just yet for the roster. I'm still pretty happy with it. Out of all the new characters that are introduced I'm surprised to say Natsu is really one candidate that's standing out a whole lot to me , as I never gave a damn about Taki TBH.

The original release of Soul Calibur 2 omitted Sophitia, Seung Mina, Rock, Hwang, and Lizardman. Sure most of the omitted characters were back in some form or another by the time the North American home version came out, but it doesn't change the fact they weren't originally in the game. And it was still played - even loved - by players.

Frankly I think they're taking the right approach. SC5 is going to have a few problems, I guarantee you that. The fewer characters there are, the easier it will be to fix them. And when fixes for those problems come, it's likely that so too will the missing characters. But it's not likely that the characters will come first.

a lot of Ezio's moves are fairly linear, and easily avoidable
