SHORT ANSWER: I saw the Fatal Fury motion picture, and a friend bought KoF '99 because it was only $10.
My friend Quad was really into the emulation scene, crawling all over newsgroups and IRC channels collecting ROMs. He's obsessed with archiving things. Anyways, as a result of this, he developed a slight interest in the KoF series. Personally, I'd only played a small amount of Fatal Fury 1 on the SNES, and saw the motion picture on television and loved it. Shortly afterwards, I borrowed Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition from someone. God, that game sucked, but I stayed up all night, fighting Geese for a whole damn hour before I finally beat him (I didn't play fighters much back then). I hated it all, but put up with it out of my love for Terry. Then one day, I'm at the mall with Quad and he buys KoF '98 for Dreamcast. At his house, we mess with it some. I recognize it as that game with Terry I saw in a magazine once. I play as Terry, and am surprised to find he has many of the same moves as in Wild Ambition. But, I can't get past Choi, but don't care, because fighting games suck anyways.
Time passed, and KoF '99 was released on PSX for a measly $10, causing one of my friends to buy it. He brought it over and we tried it out. We didn't like it too much, so he planned on getting rid of it. But it had unlockables, which I'm a whore for, and the game seemed to at LEAST be worth $10. So, I bought it off of him. Every time he came over, we'd play it against one another. And gradually, all my friends and I were playing it against eachother. It went on, and we played that game to friggin' death. The more I played it, the more I realized the subtleties of the system, and fell more in love with it. What began as me striving to surpass my friends at it became much more... Not to mention that the story grabbed me.
Looking for movelists, because I was confused about how to do Power Dunk in '99, I found KoF Online. Via that site, I became exposed to a large majority of KoF-ness. At that time, KOF 2001 had just come out... I got insanely obsessed, reading about what happened to K' in the next two games... Unfortunatley, they had no U.S. release. I rante dKoF to myu friends non-stop, and got way too obsessed with it for a while. Things cooled down for a while, and then 2k/2k1 came out here. We played 2001 probably more than we even played '99.
I used ROMs to play and beat every KOF and see evry ending in all the games that don't have stateside releases. Bought a NGPC with a group of games. Started buying KoF wall scrolls, soundtracks... Spent two hours jsut sitting there in 2002, trying to design/perfect K' combos... I've become a complete and total raving KoF fanboy. Meh.
