pc advocates euthanasy, asks for a gun

Postby Fuu » Fri Mar 04, 2011 11:04

I'm having trouble booting my pc, It just doesn't power up. Kind of powers up a few times but shuts down in a few seconds, i need to switch off/on the power supply if i want to retry, might take up to an hour to actually boot(!!!). While on i don't have any real issue other than it being a cranky old piece of shit.
It happened about 4 months ago that my router burned, and took to hell the pc port it was connected to. Pc worked so far, but now this. I'm more inclined to believe it's a motherboard issue, but i guess before shelling for pretty much a new pc i might as well try a new power supply.

I am a bit behind in hardware proficiency tho, I guess i can just buy a new power supply and it will just work for a 4-5 years old pc without problems?

And any other things i could try? Like diagnostics software, or whatever?

Posting specs just in case

you should look at your old power supply and match the voltage AND the plug (that plugs into the motherboard).

New power supplies have much higher watts which probably won't fry your pc but will cost a lot more anyway and use a new plug with more pins / weird shape.

Also note pentium D iirc needs a 4 pin power lead as well as the main plug for the motherboard.

I have a pentium D 3ghz and I've replaced the psu twice over five odd years

you shouldn't have much of a problem. seems like the PSU isnt giving out in terms of power what it should be. a new one should fix what problems you're having if it's the PSU.

A 600w PSU? D:
Unless Fuu is going to get some super awesome computer hardware or pretty much build one from scratch with the current mid-high end stuff, I don't think a 600w is needed.

You can do some calculations here to see what's required: http://www.antec.outervision.com/PSUEngine
The calculator says you only need 260ish watts based on what you mentioned (adding the usual stuff like DVD drive etc), so a 400w PSU would do good, if I got the calculation right.

Obviously more wattage would be awesome but any extra watts you buy for your PSU would go to waste. My last computer with a Radeon HD 4850, 4gb ram and super old 250gb hard disk can run fine with a 460w PSU. So unless you are looking to massively upgrade your computer, you can get a PSU with average wattage and call it a day.

I was upgrading my computer (building up from scratch save for the hard disk) and went to Newegg to scour for information before buying anything (I don't buy from there, since I'm like an ocean apart from where they are). I think it helps a lot to see the general impression for the PSU you're buying, because if it's bad, it'll screw up your computer. So it's important to have a PSU that's stable, functional and won't set your computer on fire.

Thanks guys for the detailed advices! I looked around these days and turned out the cheapest PSU i could score in this hole was actually a 600w! How silly.

Everything seems to be working fine right now! Viva things that work!

disregard the previous post! dvd reader and dvd writer don't work, the writer actually gave out a little smoke!

hmm don't have time to bring the pc to the shop, i guess for the time being the best course of action is to switch to the old psu? albeit everything seems fine minus the mentioned things.

give up on your dvd media.
Everything should be on hard drive or portable flash memory or online storage now

Don't give up on DVD just yet.
Jump drives and flash memory can still short out. Happened to me a few times.
And who knows there may be a situation where you have to boot from your cd/dvd
drive in order to fix your operating system.

I still burn cds but only for data archive purposes, and backup, but i would also reccomend
getting rid of your DVD drive if you are not using it for the same purposes.

Unless you bought expensive quality brands, all your 10 year old dvds are now corrupted! I transferred all mine that were still working straight to HD. Get a hard drive, back up your data then put it away on a shelf.
