Ancient bump.

PS3 conference held yesterday. The main details:
- PS3 will launch in November simultaneously in 3 regions
- 1 million units to be available at launch
- It will come with a 60GB hard drive with Linux preinstalled (wtf?)
- The online service will have many of XBox Live's features, but will be free (I'd love to see how they stay solvent with this)
- PS2 and PS1 games will be displayed in high-def on the PS3
- Developers will get their final PS3 devkits in June

That's all well and good, but what's the damn thing going to cost?

No, PS3 online service will be similar to X360's Live service.

The basic service will be free, but if you want more features you need to pay to get a premium account.

The question is how much will cost the goddamned Blu-ray discs, since Sony will not release PS3 games on DVD.

On a side note, according to IGN, the HDD is REQUIRED for all PS3 games, but it hasn't been confirmed if the console will include the HDD in the package.

WTF?

The Blu-Ray's production costs aren't very different if we compare them with the DVD's. A bit more expensive.

And isn't the PS3 supposed to have the HDD as a default part of the hardware?

Click the link, dammit!

Just in case: (C&P from PS3 IGN)

Earlier, we mistakenly reported that Sony had confirmed plans to include the hard disk with the PS3 right out of the box. Kutaragi actually stopped short of confirming this, leaving it as an area of speculation for now. He did state that Sony hopes to avoid a situation where some systems have the drive and others don't (Kutaragi didn't mention Xbox 360, but he was probably thinking it).

It's not so much about production cost than it is about how much the games will sell for. The XB360 uses DVD9, but the games sell for $60 (as opposed to $40-50 for current-gen DVD games). If PS3 is going to use a different format, expect the games to cost more.

As for the hard disk, yeah, I think Kutaragi actually mentioned that it wouldn't be included, but that all developers should develop as if it were a standard accessory.

I read that stuff from IGN way before Kutaragi said "no, no HDD". Sorry :(

The XB360 uses DVD9, but the games sell for $60

Production costs are higher.

I don't think the PS3 games will cost more than 60USD, either... unless programming on that thing is expensive as hell. It still has little to do with the format.

I'm still LOLing @ that "omg PS3 will make use of the 4D" declaration from Kutaragi.

And I'm LOLing harder @ the stupid fanboys that heard that and had multiple orgasms.

Next Gen updates:

- Nintendo president Satoru Iwata reports that the Revolution's 'virtual console' will feature Sega Genesis and TurboGrafx-16 games. 1up's article states that while the system won't have all the games it will feature the 'best of them' (sorry, Keith Courage fans...). RUMOR: G4's AOTS stated today that the games offered won't solely be from Sega and Hudson.

Link: 1up

- Sony is redesigning the PS3 controller - presumably to something less horrific

PS3 will also not have any region lockouts on PS3 games!

If so, I can import GG XX Slash and the PS2 KOF collections. With those and OUtrun 2006 coming out for the PS2, I'll finally have a reason to get rid of my Xbox!

I'm probably missing something here (I'm not quite import savvy) but aren't those articles just saying that PS3 games will be region-free? Would the region free aspect really apply to backward compatible titles?? If so the final statement in the IGN article interests me greatly:

IGN wrote:It's unknown if there will be any type of "patching" system for multi-language releases, although that might be possible on supported games post-release now that the PS3 is carrying its massive HDD and flash memory support

Dare to dream of downloadable fan translations of Japanese only titles??? I know it's unrealistic (since I can't imagine PS1 games being 'supported') but I'd flip over the chance to play an English translation of Persona 2: Innocent Sin.
