PS3 Topic

Postby Eczema » Sat May 31, 2008 14:05

I fear I'm slowly caving into the PS3. I've been watching the latest Soul Calibur IV trailers and the fanservice got to me. So many awesome looking characters. Also, Darth Vader! Add to this GTAIV, MGS4, and GT5, and also FF13, RE5 and T6 in the future. Gahhh...

Anyway, we already have a Wii topic, DS topic, and PSP topic, so I guess it's time for a PS3 one. Who here owns one? What's the best deal currently?

I ordered one of these the night they became available.

It's not the best deal for the PS3, but I figured that I might as well get the one that has the name of the game I got it for right on it.
The best deal sort of depends. And you're in Australia right? Where as the US regular black bundle gets the ps2 playing 80 gig, the Australian one is apparently the 40 gig. I'm not sure if the regular 40 gig version is packing the DualShock 3, so if that's the case, you might as well get one of the MGS4 or GTA4 bundles because it comes with the controller and a game for an extra cost that is less than the buying either the game or the controller seperately.
But you don't have the listen to me. I spent the most amount of money possible just to get a special color.

yeah im in australia, but i dont know much about the different models. thats one thing thats put me off the ps3 and 360 so far. elite, core, 40 gig, 80 gig, etc. i dont know what's going on and am scared of investing in the wrong one. I think Nintendo have got it right by just being simple.

ugh, just did some research on wiki about all the different models. no backwards compatability on 40gb model? software updates? also visited the official aussie ps3 site and they dont mention an 80 gb model at all. maybe im just lazy but i wish more companies followed Apple and Nintendo's example and just made their products easy to pick up and play.

but i just keep looking at that mgs4 bundle and its so damn appealing.

If I do end up getting another current gen console the PS3 will probably be it, but not for quite a long time. I'm in no hurry to play MGS4, seeing how I haven't finished 1-3 yet, and I can't think of too many other reasons to buy one right now.

Over here the 80 gig is only available with the bundles, so I guess Australia just doesn't get the 80 gig (or backwards compatiblity) at all. You might want to look into getting a used 60 gig if you don't have room for your ps2 anymore. Getting a used ps3 doesn't seem like too bad of a route to go, though you probably wouldn't have a controller with rumble. Luckily they aren't notorious for breaking.

lack of backwards compatibility isn't a deal breaker, but its pretty disappointing nonetheless.

do u think its a good idea to get one from asia, since the games arent region-coded? dont really care about blu-ray movies atm. not sure how this would affect backwards compatibility with aussie and "import" games however.

Well, the PS3 games aren't region-coded, and you can have multiple-region accounts on PSN so the store isn't a problem (all downloads work, you just need a way to pay for them). However DVDs, PS1/ PS2 games (if you have the compatible models), and BDVDs do depend on region, so if you think you'll want to use it for one of those sooner or later you might want to go domestic.

Are the 80 gig PS3s actually available anywhere in the US? My friend just bought a PS3 last weekend and we went to a bunch of stores and all they carried were the 40 gig model. We checked some websites and only found listings for the 40 gig as well - the 80 gig wasn't currently up for purchase, be it in a bundle or otherwise.

Anyway the 40 gig my friend bought didn't come with a Dualshock controller - is Sony supposed to be packing these in to current PS3s?

I'll eventually buy a PS3 but I'm with Kriz on the various model confusion/irritation. On the one hand I want backward compatibility and I want it to actually work so the discontinued 60 gig sounds the best for me (I've heard there are issues with the 80 gigs emulation of certain titles). However, I want a Dualshock 3 controller and I'd really rather not buy a used system. That established the 80 gig sounds like a better fit but it doesn't seem to be actually available anywhere so I'm kinda left with the 40 gig. But I'm interested in a Wi-Fi connection for online gaming - from what I can tell the 40 gig model doesn't have this but the 80 gig does (no idea about the 60).

So I'm not really loving my options at this rate. This gen of consoles almost seems like more trouble then it's worth.

The 60 gig model does have a wireless connection. The wired connection is faster though.

I don't see the need for a Dual Shock 3 unless they un-fucked the retarded design of the R2 and L2 buttons. Vibration isn't even used in most games right now.

I heard that the SIXAXIS controllers will be discontinued and all controllers sold with future PS3s will be the DualShock 3.

Also, found this chart on wiki that clarifies the various models. Looks like 40gb is the standard now...which means no backwards compatibility is also the standard???

been doing some research on displaying the PS3 on computer monitors, since my widescreen LCD monitor is better than my pitiful SDTV. I've read that my monitor doesn't support HDCP however, so what other options are open to me? Buying a newer monitor that supports HDCP would still be cheaper than buying an HDTV, but my current model is still pretty good and I don't want to ditch it because it is missing this one feature. what other options are available to me?

I didn't know that the PS3 required HDCP. That sucks. It seems to me that HDCP was dreamed up less to protect content and more to make otherwise perfectly fine hardware obsolete. Have you seen what it takes to watch a Blu-ray on a PC with a Blu-ray drive? HDCP compliant motherboard, videocard, software, and monitor. It's retarded. But I digress.
I can't vouch for it myself, but it seems like this will do the trick: http://www.hdfury.com/
The gamer edition is not cheap, but it is a lot cheaper than buying an HDTV. Of course, I'd search around. Chances are you could find a device that does the same thing for a lot cheaper. This is just what I found searching HDCP PS3 on google. Hopefully this can start you on the right track.

yeah i've come across that. it seems awfully complicated, however, and at US$150 (+however much extra for delivery), I may as well shell out a bit more and get a brand new monitor that is HDCP compatible (a quick search found me a 22" for AU$300). I could use a few extra inches...hohoho.

the other alternative would be to get a VGA cable which are pretty cheap. but i need to do some research on this first. it seems there are some display issues.

found this little item that allows you to play PSWii60 on a non-HDCP monitor.

http://www.xcm.cc/xcm_1080p_vga_box.htm

looks pretty good! but still, im not too good with this stuff so im not sure. if i were to hook up a console and my PC, how do I tell my monitor which one to display? same goes with the speakers - where will it play the sound from?

was thinking of buying the acer AL2216 as well...
