SF3: Third Strike

Postby SonicTempest » Wed Jun 27, 2007 00:34

So with the release of that CPS3 emu I've been playing Third Strike.
(Don't ask for roms, I'm not going to give them to you and it's against forum rules)

My first fighting game was KOF'99, so I'm totally unacquainted with the types of tactics that SF3 players use. Some starter tips would be nice.

Also, I use SA3 Ken and SA3 Dudley. SA2 Ryu as well, but he doesn't seem that hard to use to begin with lol.

I'd stick with the Dreamcast version (and 2nd revision of 3S in arcade). First version has some funny shit like Urien's unblockable (which is annoying if you don't parry it on time).

With Ryu SA2, something that works funny is his classic J.FP, 2FP, Hadouken, Denjin Hadouken... but you must let it load for a bit, and with the correct timming, when you shoot it, the enemy would be forced to parry it (or be hit, since this move can't be blocked). Good way to raise his dizzy bar.

I personally like to use SA1 Ryu, SA1-3 Remy, SA1 Sean or SA1 Yang.

Isn't the first revision the one that people normally use though? :o
I don't want to play a version of the game which no-one plays.

And wasn't Ryu SA2 Shin Shoryuken? *double checks*
Yeah it is. Denjin is SA3. :p

It's the one you find in arcades, so... yeah.

Doesn't change the fact that the DC / 2nd revision is better.

Yeah it is. Denjin is SA3. :p

Yes, my bad. I got confused ^^u

- Parries. Use 'em, time 'em, take 'em to your advantage. Stuff like stand or crouch LPs/LKs or even normals in general can be very adaptable to parry against - specials may take some time, but stuff like Remy's sonic boom can be easily dealt with. If you can time a super right after a parry, then that's even better (Like how one JP Hugo player pulled off his 720 + P SA right after a quick parry).

- Universal overheads may be a bit slow, but they can help putting in a viable mixup option, especially for faster characters like Yun/Yang or Ibuki. Don't use them too oftently, but try to at times alongside your regular pokes.

- A lot of people, I notice (at least from match vids) tend to pull of throws a lot of the time when they're close, so try to get close to them, avoid their throw (shown by their throw miss animation) then punish 'em.

I more or less play :
- SA I Urien (yeah, not the top tier one)
- SA II Q (triple taunt defense ftw)
- SA I Hugo
- SA I/III Dudley

Any specific tips for Dudley? Like, what his pokes and specials are useful for and stuff.
His pokes seem very good in general. At least, that's what it looks like to me.

Question: is the CPS3 emu faster or the same speed as the DC emu? It seemed to me that DC emu was kind of sluggish so I never got into it much. Or maybe it was because I found it pointless to have an emu that required me to download all the games instead of just using my collection.

the CPS3 emu goes at 60 fps, and it's very stable.

Funnily enough, I forgot Alex (SA I, II) in that list lol.

- First thing you've obviously noticed is that Dudley has his fair share of target combos. They're easy to work on and link into, such as f+MK, MK, HP or LP, MP, MK (You'll hear him say "One, two, three!" during a successful target combo chain). You can cancel midway (especially with the ones that uses the MP button) into a special or even a super.

- For his normals, I find his crouch MP one of the most useful. Rapid fast, and is very easy to link into his SAIII. In terms of jump-ins, you've got nothing better than his jump HK - hits deep and has a decent hitbox - and you can link into any of your grounded normals. You find some decent juggle setups after his crouch HK, but they mostly require good timing and the opponent being positioned in the corner.
- As for his specials:

= Jet Uppercut is best used during combos, and not often as an anti-air, since it can easily trade hits with any jump normal.
= Machine Gun Punch is nice to cover distance, and if you can guarantee that you'll hit the opponent. EX version allows juggling capabilities, so try to see what you can follow it up with.
= Cross Counter is something you should NOT use when you have low life since you still take damage once you get hit. Use the normal version mostly, but not too oftenly either.
= Ducking (HCF + K) has two followups, one with a punch and one with mini-uppercut, and generally, is good to avoid some high projectiles like Ryu's Hadouken. Don't use too much during a match just so wouldn't be predictable.
= Short Swing Blow (HCB + K) is another move to avoid any close or quick attacks. Pull off an EX version of the move for a surprise attack since it's incredibly fast.
= Oh, and since you're using SAIII, the button version changes the distance Dudley moves forwards with. LP is the shortest, while HP is the longest.

More stuff and tips are available on SRK's Wiki entry for Dudley. Do give it a read.

Long ago, I happened to be looking for info about XIII, I realized that the official arcadia site had some few matches that previewed their DVD release of tougeki '09..... In that preview there it was a pretty cool Makoto vs I think Chun Li match where Makoto dominated using SA III.... Now that video seems to be down, and I don't remember the name of the player.... but at least it got me hocked up with looking for good Makoto matches.

I never really bothered with Makoto on 3S, from the characters I played, only Roshihikari had some interesting Yang matches, Pino had a cool Necro and Kuroda was an all around Q (kinda odd since the character is so.... special).

EDIT : This was the vid, the player was Momochi vs Tokido (Momochi doesn't really shows up on early match vids). I was sure that it was SA III the one he used... Oh well.
